Electric Capital has recently unveiled its latest Developer Report, shedding light on the current landscape of the developer community in the crypto space. Here are some key insights from the report (summarized from Blockworks): - As of November 2024, the crypto industry boasts approximately 23,613 monthly active developers, representing a minute fraction (0.0875%) of the 27 million global software developer population. Despite a remarkable 2000% surge over the past decade, these numbers still fall short of the industry's peak in 2022, which saw around 31,000 developers actively engaged. - A significant trend observed among crypto developers is the shifting geographical distribution of talent. In contrast to 2015, where 80% of developers operated out of North America and Europe, the landscape has evolved. Presently, these continents have witnessed a decline in developer presence to 24% and 31%, respectively, while Asia has emerged as the frontrunner with 32% of developer engagement. - The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) continues to reign supreme as the preferred tech stack, boasting a substantial network effect with 8,925 developers – approximately 3.6 times larger than the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) stack, which accommodates 2,499 developers. - Noteworthy is Solana's ascendancy as the top ecosystem for new developers in the past year, surpassing even Ethereum in this aspect. This achievement is particularly remarkable considering Ethereum's strong foothold, supported by numerous layer-2 rollups within its ecosystem. - Among active layer-2 solutions, Base leads the pack with 4,287 developers, followed by Arbitrum (3,450), Starknet (2,548), Optimism (2,416), Scroll (1,517), and zkSync (1,115). - The Bitcoin network hosts around 1,200 monthly active developers, a figure that has remained relatively stable over the past year.
