🌊 Meet the West Australian seahorse, or 𝘏𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴! Use these identifying features to spot one in the wild, then snap a photo and report your sighting to the iSeahorse project on iNaturalist. Learn more here: iseahorse.org
Global goals for the ocean fail when they ignore local fishing communities – this week’s #ThrowbackThursday spotlight study shows that for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to work, we need to listen to those who know the waters best. Read more: projectseahorse.org/resource…
🌊 As part of our 30-year celebrations, Prof. Amanda Vincent, took the story of three decades of advancing seahorse science and marine conservation to the Royal Geographical Society’s Monday Night Lecture in London this week. Watch now: shorturl.at/C6wTt
🎣 Can alternative jobs stop overfishing? This week’s #ThrowbackThursday spotlight study showed that a new job, such as seaweed farming, does not automatically replace fishing. Read more: projectseahorse.org/resource…
🤝 Join over 4,400 citizen scientists in uploading photos and details of seahorse sightings to iSeahorse on iNaturalist.org. This helps our scientists fill research gaps to better protect these magical fishes and the seas. Learn more here: iseahorse.org
This week’s #ThrowbackThursday spotlight study brought together fishers, scientists, and traders in the Philippines to protect seahorses – a collaborative approach to figure out how to help vulnerable populations bounce back. Read more: projectseahorse.org/resource…
Does collecting marine organisms to develop new medicines (marine bioprospecting), pose a threat to ocean conservation? Read more on marine bioprospecting and recommendations to minimize risk in this week’s #ThrowbackThursday study: projectseahorse.org/resource…
📸 Say hello to the magical West African seahorse, or𝘏𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴, logged onto iSeahorse by citizen scientist Dennis Rabeling.
Upload your seahorse sightings onto iSeahorse too! Learn more here: iseahorse.org
This week’s #ThrowbackThursday spotlight study maps out how we can protect freshwater species and habitats from human disturbance by offering a blueprint for Freshwater Protected Areas (FWPAs). Read more: projectseahorse.org/resource…
Our PhD candidate, Samara, has interviewed 200+ fishers, traders, divers & community members across 8 coastal districts in Sri Lanka, uncovering new insights into #seahorse fisheries, trade and their cultural significance.

Our spotlight on our global arts movement, Inspired by Iconic Fishes, continues! We’re delighted to share this beautiful mug by Kamila Thayanne at Ateliê Somos Um in Brazil, who creates each piece with care, intention, and respect for nature. Learn more: projectseahorse.org/seahorse…
Male #seahorses get pregnant, but do females do the courting? This week’s #ThrowbackThursday study showed that the sex roles are not reversed – males still compete for mates and exhibit behaviours such as wrestling and snout-snapping. Read more: projectseahorse.org/resource…
#ProjectSeahorse Program Leader Sarah Foster is in Rome this week, representing the International Union for Conservation of Nature at a global meeting on fisheries. The message: healthy fisheries depend on healthy oceans. 🌊🐟

41 seahorse species have been recorded on iSeahorse by our incredible community of citizen scientists! But six species are still missing, and some have only been recorded once – join us in searching for them. Learn more here: projectseahorse.org/missings…
🤔 How do we save seahorses from overfishing? This week’s #ThrowbackThursday spotlight proposed a simple 10cm minimum size limit for global trade to promote reproduction, protect smaller populations, and simplify trade regulations for officials. Read more: projectseahorse.org/resource…
Our PhD student and researcher Ruth Arnold's fieldwork in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula found that seahorses are often caught as bycatch despite a ban. Just 32 seahorses were recorded across 60 dives, providing valuable baseline data for future monitoring.
