Waymo announced today it is expanding to Canada, with plans to begin offering self-driving taxi rides in Toronto in 2028. Last month, we released a report finding that automated ridehailing services could deliver benefits across Canada, adding CAD $1.34 billion in gross value added to GDP and supporting approximately 14,000 jobs by 2050 under the study’s central adoption scenario. “Robotaxis have already shown they can be safer than human drivers, and Waymo's arrival could pave the way for safer, cleaner roads here in Canada.” - says @jdtabish. ➡️ Ontario stands to gain the most. Ontario would see the largest GDP impact under the central scenario, reaching approximately $610 million by 2050, driven in part by its large automotive manufacturing sector. ➡️ A growing market for self-driving services. Canada’s automated ridehailing fleet could grow from roughly 2,800 robotaxis in 2035 to 22,100 by 2050 – gradually increasing from 3.5% to 35% of taxi and for-hire vehicle kilometres travelled nationwide. ➡️ Economic activity and employment across the industry. Automated ridehailing could add up to $1.34 billion to Canada’s GDP by 2050. The approximately 14,000 jobs supported would include 1,800 related to vehicle manufacturing and 12,200 related to local service operations and maintenance, counting both direct and indirect employment. ➡️ Cleaner transportation and safer roads. Assuming a fully electric automated ridehailing fleet, the report estimates annual tailpipe emissions savings of 217 million kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050. Safer roads could also deliver $26 million in annual social cost savings, including reduced healthcare, emergency response, policing, property damage, and insurance-related costs.

A driverless truck shouldn't need a human to place warning triangles on the highway. FMCSA just approved a five-year exemption allowing autonomous trucks to use flashing warning beacons instead, finding they could be just as safe or safer. A smart step forward for autonomous trucking. trucknews.com/technology/fmc…

AI competition is still moving fast. Different firms lead in different places, startups keep entering, and customers use multiple tools. That’s a good thing. We should keep it going.

AI agents make the tradeoff especially clear. Agents could make it easier to compare products, find lower prices and switch services. But forcing account access too early could introduce security, fraud and compliance risks, which is an advantage for larger agent developers.
