The National Press Club is honoring The New York Times with the 2026 John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award for its sustained fight in federal court to defend the First Amendment rights of its journalists — and for the American public’s right to know, particularly as the country remains in a major war with Iran. From challenging unconstitutional Pentagon press restrictions to refusing to surrender confidential sources under subpoena, @nytimes has stood firm when press freedom is under threat. The Times will be honored at our Fourth Estate Award Gala on November 12 in Washington, D.C. Tickets and info: press.org/newsroom/national-…

The National Press Club is honoring José Rubén Zamora — founder of Guatemalan investigative outlet el Periódico and one of Central America's most consequential journalists — with the 2026 John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award. Arrested in 2022, imprisoned on politically motivated charges, and forced to see his newsroom shut down, Zamora paid an extraordinary price for his journalism. He remains under house arrest today. José Carlos Zamora will accept the award on his father's behalf at our Fourth Estate Award Gala on November 12 in Washington, D.C. Tickets and information: press.org/newsroom/national-…

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 18 – National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. released the following statement today: “The National Press Club condemns President Trump's declaration on Truth Social that he plans to immediately ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. Banning news organizations from the White House based on the administration's disapproval of their coverage is a clear attempt to control which voices are allowed to witness and report on the exercise of presidential power. Every American should understand what is at stake. If implemented, this ban would mark an unprecedented assault on press freedom. The National Press Club calls on the President to reverse this declaration immediately. 1/4

A government confident in its actions should never fear independent scrutiny. A free press exists to ask difficult questions, uncover uncomfortable facts, and inform the American people. By barring major national news outlets from the White House, the administration is not only attacking individual outlets — it is directly attacking every reporter's constitutionally protected right to hold power to account, regardless of political party. The scrutiny a president receives from the White House press corps benefits readers, viewers and listeners across the country, giving Americans a greater understanding of government policies. 3/4

The message today’s action sends is alarming. It tells other news organizations to soften their coverage. It tells reporters to think twice before asking difficult questions, or else lose access. And it leaves the American people knowing less about the government that serves them.” 4/4

“The National Press Club is heartbroken by the deaths of aerial reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, killed while covering breaking news for NBC4 and Telemundo 52. Eliana and George took to the sky to help their community understand the tragedy unfolding below. They never came home. Journalism depends on people willing to go toward the news and bear witness when others cannot. Today, our profession mourns two of them. We hold their families, their colleagues and the entire Los Angeles journalism community close in our hearts.”

6/7 When government officials decide which journalists may enter the room, they begin to control which questions get asked, whose scrutiny they face and what the public gets to see and hear.

7/7 That should alarm every American, regardless of politics. A free press exists so the public can know what its government is doing, question those who wield its power and hold them accountable.
