I’m excited about my next book “The Prophetic Lens: The Camera and Black Moral Agency From MLK to Darnella Frazier” on 9/13/22. Where would we be without the camera during the Civil Rights Movement or in MN or GA in 2020? #PreOrder on #Amazon

36 years ago today, Thomas Sankara, a revolutionary African leader, was assassinated by French imperialists. Sankara drove out French imperialism from Burkina Faso and withdrew from IMF and made the country non-reliant on foreign aid. He was assassinated in a coup led by his close ally, Blaise Compaoré supported by French imperialists As far as African leadership goes, Thomas Sankara was cut from a different piece of cloth. Here are some of his accomplishments, ONLY 4 YEARS in power (1983-87): – He vaccinated 2.5 million children against meningitis, yellow fever and measles in a matter of weeks. – He initiated a nation-wide literacy campaign, increasing the literacy rate from 13% in 1983 to 73% in 1987. – He planted over 10 million trees to prevent desertification – He built roads and a railway to tie the nation together, without foreign aid – He appointed females to high governmental positions, encouraged them to work, recruited them into the military, and granted pregnancy leave during education. – He outlawed female genital mutilation, forced marriages and polygamy in support of Women’s rights – He sold off the government fleet of Mercedes cars and made the Renault 5 (the cheapest car sold in Burkina Faso at that time) the official service car of the ministers. – He reduced the salaries of all public servants, including his own, and forbade the use of government chauffeurs and 1st class airline tickets. – He redistributed land from the feudal landlords and gave it directly to the peasants. Wheat production rose in three years from 1700 kg per hectare to 3800 kg per hectare, making the country food self-sufficient. – He opposed foreign aid, saying that “he who feeds you, controls you.” – He spoke in forums like the Organization of African Unity against continued neo-colonialist penetration of Africa through Western trade and finance. • He called for a united front of African nations to repudiate their foreign debt. He argued that the poor and exploited did not have an obligation to repay money to the rich and exploiting – In Ouagadougou, Sankara converted the army’s provisioning store into a state-owned supermarket open to everyone (the first supermarket in the country). – He forced civil servants to pay one month’s salary to public projects. – He refused to use the air conditioning in his office on the grounds that such luxury was not available to anyone but a handful of Burkinabes. – As President, he lowered his salary to $450 a month and limited his possessions to a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a broken freezer. – A motorcyclist himself, he formed an all-women motorcycle personal guard. – He required public servants to wear a traditional tunic, woven from Burkinabe cotton and sewn by Burkinabe craftsmen. (The reason being to rely upon local industry and identity rather than foreign industry and identity) – When asked why he didn’t want his portrait hung in public places, as was the norm for other African leaders, Sankara replied “There are seven million Thomas Sankaras.” – An accomplished guitarist, he wrote the new national anthem himself 🖋️if you love our content, please consider supporting our page on AfricanArchives.Support (follow the ko-fi page too for weekly posts roundup)

Sharing again that my father was NOT advocating for a #colorblind society. Please stop taking one line from one speech (in which he also talked about #policebrutality & #reparations) to make it seem as though his dream was void of work, like teaching history & eradicating racism.
.@JoeRogan discusses a California school indoctrinating his 5-year-old daughter into a "woke, guilt-ridden ideology" centered around becoming an antiracist activist. "They hired some person to teach them that they have to be antiracist and it's not good enough not to be racist. What? My kids aren't racist at all. Why are you putting that into their head? That they have to be antiracist and call out racism. They were trying to make them be activists. Hey, they're five. They want friends. They don't care what their friends look like. They are trying to have a good time. They're five. They're just playing. You're indoctrinating them into this woke, guilt-ridden ideology that you are carrying around with you, and you feel like you have an obligation to impose this on children. Our goal should have always been the goals the liberals had in the 60s and 70s, which is a color-blind society. The Martin Luther King notion that we should treat people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin... None of the real problems get addressed, and instead, they just try to make kids feel guilty. I didn't like the woke s**t. I didn't like that they were asking kids their pronouns." ------ Why are schools brainwashing young children into becoming antiracist activists who perceive the world predominantly through the prism of skin color? How can we inspire Americans to re-embrace Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of a color-blind society, where the focus lies on the content of one's character rather than the color of one's skin?

Kalief Browder was FALSELY accused of stealing a backpack. He spent three years in Rikers Island, one of the worst prisons in the world, awaiting trial, mostly in solitary confinement. He committed suicide. Donald Trump has 78 federal and state criminal charges. He goes home every night. He’s running for president. #WhitePrivilege

A Black family on an AAU basketball trip is terrorized and harassed by Frisco, TX police … all because these geniuses did not know the state abbreviation for Arkansas is AR, not AZ — so the police assumed the car was stolen. I hope they sue and the officers involved are fired, but none of that will erase the emotional damage and trauma done to this family.
Frisco Police terrorize a black family at gunpoint after a cop runs Arkansas plate numbers through the Arizona database and then assumes the car is stolen when the plates don't show up. They then force the entire family out of the car one by one at gunpoint, making women and small children obey their commands and march backward. This is just a small portion of the 20-minute stop.

Emmett Till should be 82 today. His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, ensured that the world saw how gruesomely her 14 year-old child was murdered. Racism isn’t disagreement. Families grieve. Communities mourn. Dreams wither. Humanity suffers. People perish. Remember Emmett Till.

The Battle of Bamber Bridge, 1943. Racist US military police attacked black US troops on British soil. US military authorities demanded the town’s pubs impose a colour bar, the local landlords responded with signs that read “Black Troops Only” which pissed them off. A THREAD

In 1944, a group of white men lynched Reverend Isaac Simmons, a minister and farmer who owned 270 acres of land in Mississippi because they believed the land had oil deposits. Goal- to steal his land and profit from it. Oh, they weren’t finished after killing the Reverend. The men then brutally beat his son and ran him out of the county. This is one story of many where racially motivated killings of Black people in the Jim Crow South resulted in farms and land being violently stolen to profit and benefit white farmers. This is what they’re hiding while telling Black folks to pick themselves up by the “bootstraps.”#FreshVoicesRise #BlackHistoryWithLana

This one hits close to home. My grandfather, Nate Allen, a WWII vet, was also shot in the back (of his head) by a White man in 1953. My family never got justice like so many Black families. It’s why I wrote “Open Wounds.” To honor his name.
Today in 1946 WWII veteran Maceo Snipes was shot in his back by the KKK the day after he became the first Black person to cast a vote in Taylor County, Georgia. After he was shot, Mr. Snipes walked three miles to the hospital with his mother. For six hours doctors left him waiting and bleeding. By the time he was seen, he needed a blood transfusion. The doctors said the hospital had no “black blood.” Snipes died two days later. This is why I will vote in every election. The day I stop voting is the day I stop breathing. #FreshVotesBlue #BlackHistoryWithLana

My father didn’t pass away. He was assassinated. A 1967 poll reflected that he was one of the most hated men in America. Most hated. Many who quote one #MLK line, tweet egregious AI photos of him, and evoke him to deter justice actually despise #TheInconvenientKing.
