If patents are “for the weak,” as Elon Musk claims, why is he patenting his inventions? In this article, we’ll take an in-depth look at Musk’s IP strategy and patent portfolios: ow.ly/reFw50LWK8X

Your AI assistant is only as good as the data it can reach.
Ask it about a competitor’s patent position, a target’s freedom to operate, or a sequence you are working on, and it answers from the open web. Confident, fast, and not something you would put in front of a client or a steering committee.
Patsnap Open Platform fixes the data problem. Through MCP and API, your assistant and your agents can query Patsnap’s patent, literature, and life sciences data directly, inside the tools your teams already use.
Same questions. Verified answers. No tab switching.

From Boolean strings to semantic matching to agents that plan, search and refine, every stage of patent search has changed what the searcher actually does.
So what changes it next?
On October 28, PIUG and Patsnap are hosting "Beyond Boolean: How AI Is Rewriting the Rules of Patent Search."
Leading the session is Matthew Birch, a European and UK Patent Attorney and Patsnap's AI Solutions Lead for IP, with 15+ years across prosecution and litigation. He will show how search is leaving its own silo and moving into the same workflow as drafting, with both running side by side, live, and give a glimpse of where AI in patent search is heading next.

Most patent tools stop at the results list. That's where your real work starts.
Reading claims. Mapping who owns what. Working out whether the field is opening up or closing in. Then deciding what it means for your program. That's the part that takes days.
Hiro mode in Analytics is built for that part.
1. It knows the workflow. A built-in skills library matches your question to the right IP or R&D analysis, from whitespace to invalidity to competitive intel.
2. It reasons before it retrieves. Hiro reads dense legal and technical language and works out what you're really asking.
3. It's grounded in real data. 208M patents updated weekly, 215M non-patent literature documents and 1.6B legal data points across 174 jurisdictions.
Ask in plain language. Get structured analysis back, not a list of results.
Hiro isn't another search tool, it's a thinking partner.

We’re pleased to welcome Mark Davies to Patsnap as Head of Product for Life Sciences.
Mark brings more than 20 years of experience in drug discovery data and AI. He led the development of ChEMBL and SureChEMBL, spent nine years at BenevolentAI as SVP of Informatics and Data, and most recently co-founded Kiin Bio, where he built an AI platform for drug discovery.
He will lead product strategy across our bio and chemistry intelligence solutions. We want the people setting that direction to understand both the data behind the tools and the research decisions they need to support.
“Some of the biggest delays in drug discovery come not from the science, but from getting to the right data at the right time. Patsnap holds both the life sciences data and the technology to fix that, and that is why this is an exciting time for me to join and build what R&D teams actually need,” says Mark.
Welcome to Patsnap, Mark. 👏

Matthew Birch has recently joined Patsnap as our AI Solutions Lead for IP.
Matthew is a Chartered UK and European Patent Attorney with more than 15 years in IP. He practiced at leading European and global firms, prosecuting and litigating patents across medical devices, renewable energy and AI. Those are the applications our drafting tools are built to support.
He now owns the roadmap for our agentic patent drafting products.
That is deliberate. As drafting becomes AI-enabled, the people setting the direction should be the people who have done the drafting. Matthew has pressure-tested this work against the standard the profession requires, because he has had to meet it himself.
"My interests have always been in incentivizing companies and individuals to innovate, and in facilitating reward for their ingenuity," says Matthew. "I am thrilled to join an organization that leads its industry, and that not only enables global innovation but embraces that same ethos in the products it brings to market."
Built by practitioners, to the standard practitioners hold.
Welcome, Matthew. 👏

1,961 oligonucleotide patents expire between 2027 and 2036. 🧬
318 in 2034 alone.
That's twenty years of exclusivity ending inside a ten year window. Planning for it starts now, not in 2027.
That's what our new 2026 Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Landscape Reports are for. Part one: who controls the core patents, across composition-of-matter, delivery, and chemical modification claims. Part two: where sponsors and deal capital are concentrating across the major modalities, from siRNA and ASO to aptamers. 💊

52% of the R&D leaders we surveyed said fewer than half their projects reach market. The average is 37%.
Those figures come from 200+ senior R&D leaders across five industries. We turned them into a benchmark, so you can put your own success rate and wasted spend next to your industry's.

There are a lot of AI tools out there right now, and no obvious place to begin. We get it. 😓
Some teams haven't brought AI into their IP and R&D work yet, some tried something that stalled, and some already have agents running and want more out of them.
Wherever your team is at, there's a match for you in Patsnap. 🤝

Most R&D leaders can name their annual budget to the dollar. Far fewer can name what last year’s dead projects cost. That figure is calculable: your budget, the share of projects that reach market, your cycle length.
Three inputs, one number, your industry average beside it.

Everyone keeps upgrading the model. But a great model on a shallow source still guesses.
The real unlock is depth: 210M+ patents, 212M+ papers, 280M+ chemical structures and 1.6B+ legal records, one Patsnap connector away.

73% of R&D leaders say half or fewer of their projects reach market.
38% put the typical late-stage kill at $1M to $5M.
That's not bad luck. It's the predictable cost of making R&D decisions without the full picture.
Our 2026 R&D Benchmark Report traces it back to one thing: the right intelligence arriving too late. ⏱️
