So, Donald Trump wants to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, which has some Canadian folks wondering what other things we should rename as America, like a toilet perhaps. Here’s the thing, it’s already been done…. some sixty years ago and by an American company. American Standard designed a metal grate for their urinals that looks for all the world like the American shield: circles over bars… stars and stripes. Don’t ask me why… corporate hubris, I guess. Durable little thing. It’s been sitting in the bottom of Canadian urinals all this time, just waiting for the right time for Canadian men to take a stand. Over the years, I’ve spotted them in hotels, restaurants and bars, Ontario parks, and even the Ontario legislature building and Toronto City Hall.
