The era of easy FWA subscriber growth in the US might be ending. While broadband experience remains consistent among the three main US FWA operators, the untapped pool of cost-conscious customers is now much smaller, and competitors are stepping up efforts to win them. Three key trends we explore in this report: - FWA’s overall market share continues to grow, albeit slower - Cable’s revised promotions are pushing back against FWA - Starlink is a small, but growing, threat to FWA Take a look at the full analysis here: hubs.la/Q04BBMKH0 #FixedWirelessAccess #Telecom #Starlink

Consumer AI has modest network requirements. This makes the divide we found in our Mobile AI Readiness data harder to explain away. Average text AI readiness in low- and lower-middle-income countries sits around 35% below high income countries. Move from text to video and the gap grows: readiness falls 20% in lower-income markets, against 11% in high-income markets. Meanwhile, in lower- and lower-middle-income countries, an average of 24% of completed tests failed the latency conditions for voice and video AI, compared with 1% in high-income countries. Packet discard failures were 24% vs. 6%. In fact, every lower-income country we measured saw a drop of more than 5% just moving from text to voice. Yet Vietnam provides a counterexample worth studying. Its video AI readiness matches or exceeds 22 high-income countries, despite it having far lower GDP per capita. This goes to show that network maturity can outrun economic conditions, when targeted investment is made. Having exceeded 12 million customers as of June 2026, @Starlink is now winning subscribers from other networks. We compared 41 Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) providers with Starlink across 14 European markets, in urban and rural areas. Across two key metrics, they tell very different stories: - For Download Speed, Starlink wins every rural comparison, averaging 82Mbps, more than twice the rural FWA average. Also, in half the markets we tested, it matches or beats urban FWA - But FWA stays ahead for Consistent Quality, which tests whether speed, latency, jitter and packet loss are all good enough for video calls, HD streaming and gaming. - FWA passed 71% of tests in urban areas and 66% in rural areas, whereas Starlink passed 62% In the race between FWA and Starlink, whether a connection holds up in daily use matters most; this gap is where the winner will be decided. Japan's three largest mobile operators all raised prices in 2025, and as a result every one of them lost subscriber share. Rakuten Mobile kept its price flat and picked up 21.7 index points in 18 months. Price explains part of that. At ¥3,278 ($21) per month against an MNO average above ¥7,800 ($49), the monthly difference is a real incentive to switch. But Rakuten Mobile also wins at 1.31 per loss against sub-brands at comparable price tiers, where that advantage largely disappears. Something else is working. Key Findings: Subscriber growth is not explained by price alone. The Open RAN architecture is producing measurable results.  D2D could be the answer to the coverage gap. According to our data, fiber penetration is something that could do with an upgrade in Asia Pacific. Our first cross-national fixed-line study of the region, published with Fiber Network Council APAC, shows more than 80% of Wi-Fi readings in Sri Lanka and Pakistan still come from Wi-Fi 4 routers. That's two generations behind the Wi-Fi 6 hardware most common in Singapore and South Korea, where 5% of Singapore readings already sit on Wi-Fi 7. Markets with the lowest fiber penetration are also the ones connecting through the oldest equipment, so a household that finally gets fiber is disproportionately likely to lose much of its speed at the router. Operators in mature markets should bear in mind that subscribers on older Wi-Fi generations could more than double their effective speeds with a router refresh and no change of plan. Direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity has moved from ambition to commercial reality. Standard smartphones can now connect directly to satellites with no specialized hardware, closing coverage gaps that terrestrial networks haven’t yet been able to fill. For operators, regulators, and device manufacturers, it represents one of the most consequential shifts in telecommunications in a decade. A new way to track global D2D consumer adoption Opensignal has spent over a decade tracking how mobile networks actually perform for the people using them. Now we're turning that same lens on D2D, giving operators, regulators, and analysts a real-time picture of how global consumer adoption is unfolding. Read the blog: hubs.ly/Q04zTWYm0 The Opensignal D2D Satellite Map is an interactive, independent view of where we see D2D live today. It's live, free to explore, and refreshed every month as new connections are detected. #D2D #Starlink #MobileNetworkExperience #Telecom

Introducing the Opensignal D2D Satellite Map Opensignal has spent over a decade tracking how mobile networks actually perform for the people using them. Now we're turning that same lens on D2D, giving operators, regulators, and analysts a real-time picture of how global consumer adoption is unfolding. Explore today at hubs.la/Q04zTkDc0 The Opensignal D2D Satellite Map is an interactive, independent view of where D2D is live today, based on billions of real-world measurements around the globe. It's live on hubs.la/Q04zTkSP0, free to explore, and refreshed every month as new connections are detected. D2D today is still early. Most live services deliver basic connectivity, like SMS messages and emergency alerts. So the map reflects where D2D connections happen, not yet how well they perform. As D2D services mature and expand into richer use cases, we expect the performance picture to mature alongside them, and Opensignal's measurement will be there to track it. #Starlink #D2D  #SatelliteCoverage #MobileNetworkExperience

BT is buying TalkTalk’s 1.5 million broadband customers. Only 13% of those households’ mobile connections are on EE. Among TalkTalk broadband customers, 13% use EE for mobile. Among BT's own broadband customers, it's 31%. TalkTalk's base looks like any rival's (Virgin 13%, Sky 14%). So the gap comes from owning the broadband relationship, not from the brand. With the CMA due to report by 19th October, our Subscriber Analytics shows what the commentary on market share misses: - Upside: Applying BT's rate to 1.5M TalkTalk customers adds up to about 270,000 EE customers. That is an upper bound. - Leak: In TalkTalk homes, EE wins 9 mobile switches for every 10 it loses. In BT homes it wins 1.1 for every 1 lost. - Challengers: MVNOs serve 37% of TalkTalk customers' mobile connections, the highest of any base we measured. Lebara wins 2.0 switches per loss. If BT leads with EE pricing, we expect EE's share of switches won to stay below its share of switches lost. For operators running multi-brand strategies: when a broadband base is already moving to MVNOs, do you defend with the premium brand, or open the door with the value brand first? In Croatia, fixed wireless access (FWA) has gone from fallback to viable option for broadband customers. FWA is not displacing fiber, sitting at just under 60,000 connections compared to Croatia's 1.21 million fixed fiber lines. But in the right conditions, FWA is matching fiber on metrics users notice. To find out which criteria are making the most impact, read our full report: hubs.la/Q04zsVJM0
