Using her talents to create change 🙌🏽
Congratulations to Bairavi Kalatharan, a recent Bramalea Secondary School graduate and former OSSTF/FEESO Student Achievement Award winner, on being named one of Canada’s Top 10 Young Changemakers!
Through her Bharatanatyam dance talents and henna services, Bairavi has raised more than $100,000 for anti-bullying and humanitarian causes. Her advocacy draws on her own experiences of racism and bullying, helping other young people feel seen and supported.
Her creativity, compassion and determination are worth celebrating. Students bring incredible potential to our public schools. When teachers and education workers have the resources and support to nurture that potential, we help students thrive and make their mark on the world.
We can’t wait to see what you do next, Bairavi!

Why would employers bargain fairly if they know the govt can step in and end a strike? That’s the danger of C-39, and exactly why Bea testified before a HoC committee to raise concerns about the proposed legislation. We must protect collective bargaining and the right to strike.
Every child has their own ways of communicating, exploring, and engaging with the world.
Child Care Workers and Early Childhood Educators honour those differences and create opportunities for each child to participate and belong 🫶🏽
You recognize the learning in play. You respond to children’s interests, respect their ways of expressing themselves, and adapt your approach to support their needs.
Through your expertise and care, you lay the foundation for learning and relationships that continues throughout their lives.
On Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day, we celebrate your work and the lasting difference you make for children and families.
Thank you for nurturing each child’s curiosity and helping them feel valued for who they are.
It starts with you!

Parents and communities never asked to give up their say in how their public schools are governed.
Now, the Ford government is proposing rules that would leave newly elected trustees at eight supervised school boards waiting to be sworn in until provincial supervision ends. But there is no clear timeline.
Communities could cast their ballots, only to have their chosen representatives sidelined while provincial appointees continue making decisions about their schools.
Public education belongs to the public.
Parents, students and communities deserve accountable local representatives who can raise their concerns, question decisions and act on their behalf.
The Ford government must restore local decision-making and respect the voices of the people our schools serve.

Safety is the foundation of learning.
No student, teacher, or education worker should have to accept violence as part of their school day.
That’s why addressing violence and creating safer schools is a key #OSSTF bargaining priority.
119 days on strike. Still fighting for a fair deal.
Today in Ottawa, OSSTF/FEESO President @marthahradowy and Executive Officer Sherry-Ann Bowen-Gordon joined striking Bank of Canada security officers on the picket line, alongside @psac_afpc leaders Ruth Lau MacDonald and Alex Silas.
The security officers' collective agreement expired in December 2024. After many months of bargaining, these workers are now on strike in Ottawa and locked out in Montreal because the Bank of Canada continues to demand concessions instead of reaching a fair agreement.

21 days to go.
In just three weeks, OSSTF/FEESO school board members will begin casting their strike votes.
This is our chance to send a strong message at the bargaining table: members are united, members are paying attention, and members are ready to fight for the public education system Ontario students deserve.
A high turnout and a strong YES vote will give the #OSSTF bargaining team a strong mandate at the table.
The central strike vote runs November 6–16.

What do the Ford government's cuts actually look like?
Toronto Life lays it out across the TDSB:
✂️ 175 teaching positions cut from low-income schools
✂️ 40 vice-principal positions eliminated
✂️ 218 central positions cut
✂️ Nine school cafeterias closed
✂️ Programming cut at five outdoor education centres
✂️ Nearly 800 jobs eliminated overall
And at one school featured in the investigation, the student population has doubled over roughly 20 years while the number of social workers, child and youth workers and teacher assistants has been cut in half.
This is what “finding efficiencies” looks like in practice: fewer adults, fewer supports, and more pressure on classrooms already stretched thin.
And this isn’t just a Toronto story.
Across Ontario, school boards are facing staffing shortages, cuts to student supports, and growing pressure to do more with less.
When supports disappear, every student feels it.

Parents were promised answers. Instead, some are waiting months.
Just last month, the Ford government promised parent inquiries would be acknowledged within two business days, with answers targeted within five.
Now, TDSB school councils say they’ve been waiting since July for substantive responses from the government-appointed supervisor. An issue plaguing many boards across the province.
Parents deserve meaningful engagement, not less of a voice in their public schools.

De-streaming can’t succeed without the staffing, supports, and class sizes to make it work.
Meeting increasingly complex student needs requires more time, attention, and resources in the classroom, not less.
That’s why OSSTF/FEESO is fighting for meaningful class size protections at the bargaining table.

The right to strike is under threat. Take action now.
Bill C-39 would give the federal government sweeping new powers to intervene in legal strikes and weaken workers’ leverage at the bargaining table.
Take a minute to tell your MP: protect the right to strike and remove these provisions from Bill C-39 👉🏽 bit.ly/47nYzn8
