30 or so skylarks in the field where i was drilling today, not easy to catch on film, could do with cleaning the windows too!
A brilliant year for them.

“Pupils are receiving a higher-quality curriculum. Staff have developed expertise. Our school has a greater awareness of farming, environment & climate.”
That's what the LEAF Demonstration Schools Framework helps schools achieve.

I can't get out of my head that yesterday, @DefraGovUK advised us that we must apply to create fire breaks on agreement land, and they are yet to decide if there will be penalties applied. Presumably cultivation strips to stop an actual fire are force majeure?
Our first fire call out was about a month ago at 11pm. We have seen columns of smoke almost daily since then, dealt with several. Worst locally have caused evacuation of nursery school, & home owners garden fence burnt, gutter melted, thro standing crop of wheat being torched.
If SFI were to include a firebreak margin, what would you include?
Chicory? Yarrow? Birdsfoot trefoil? Wild carrot? Fat hen? Corn marigold?
All of these seem to be withstanding the drought, and all would have a biodiversity benefit. @DefraNature
🌱 One million opportunities to connect children with farming.
That's the ambition behind Open Your Gate, a new campaign from AHDB and @LEAF_Education that aims to support one million on-farm learning experiences by 2031.

Please, please, if you're interested in the future of biodiversity across farmed landscapes, read this and @cat_frampton replies.
Defra provides a headline figure, broken down that's £9/ha/yr, that's assuming you are in the 30% desirable area,
For those of us outside of protected landscapes and SSSIs, god help us cos I don't think the government will. We would consider peaklining (as opposed to baselining) if we could afford it. 12 red list bird species recorded in 8 day period in 1 arable field hedge. Never seen so
I thought that @DefraGovUK was not supposed to be political, have I got this wrong @CLAtweets @NFUtweets ?
Why are they reposting long chains of tweets praising the Labour government? I appreciate they have to implement current gov policy, but this is like they are part of Labour
Just witnessed you photobomb stage at #groundswell 10mins telling us what we already know, then you're hussled out by your minders like we were something infectious. You would have got more respect from me had you stopped to listen. Actions speak louder than words.
I am so excited to be at #Groundswell2026Farmers it is inspiring to see such innovation, pushing the boundaries on soil health, regenerative practices and profitability.
The festival has such a buzz - this is exactly the kind of farming our Roadmap is driving forward.
Take some advice from @DanielZeichner who I believe said if he had his time again at defra, he would listen and talk to farmers, not be isolated from them.
I think it's probably fair to say that the owl has decided not to go for a second brood, we've had a few months graffiti free, but last night saw it's return. I'm hoping she isn't going to bring the whole family back, one owl creates enough mess!
There are some great things happening across south yorkshire on former industrial land and polluted rivers, but you haven't worked with farmers to any meaningful extent. 2 simplistic (urban orientated) consultations with our farmer cluster. No working farmers on your panel.
South Yorkshire's nature needs your voice. 🌿
We're supporting the Local Nature Recovery Strategy - have your say on the plan to restore nature across our region. Closes Friday 31st July.

This was in the 2018 health and harmony green paper, one sentence tucked away about 2/3rds of the way through an 80 page document if i remember rightly. It has already happened to some extent with hedgerows.
Yeah! We feature in this! Huge thanks to the sponsors of the event, including AHDB. And thanks too to Bec, so pleased you managed to get a bit of a break and a look around! 👏👏👏
A big thank you to every farmer, volunteer and visitor who made @OpenFarmSunday such a success! 💚
Farmers across the country opened their gates to share what they do and why it matters, and we were proud to see AHDB colleagues getting involved too. Here are their highlights 👇
All advice much appreciated. We sadly missed spotting a grey partridge nest in silage, put eggs in incubator on the off chance they'd hatch, not really expecting success, however, we now have chick's that I gather are really hard to rear. Any tips #gamekeeper #greypartridge?
