The first Daytona 500 was a whole new ballgame. For drivers accustomed to short dirt tracks, Daytona International Speedway’s 2.5-mile layout and speeds topping 130 mph were unlike anything they had experienced. The massive speedway was intimidating, and for one driver, the lake inside the track presented an entirely different concern.

#Throwback to 1986, when Dale Earnhardt made his mark at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Behind the wheel of the No. 3 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, Earnhardt won both NASCAR Winston Cup Series races at Charlotte that season. On May 25, he captured the Coca-Cola 600, taking the lead late in the race to secure the victory. On Oct. 5, he returned to Victory Lane in the Oakwood Homes 500, completing a sweep of Charlotte’s two Cup Series points-paying races that year.
Those victories were part of a championship-winning season for Earnhardt. He recorded five wins, 16 top-five finishes and 23 top-10 finishes across 29 races, securing his second consecutive NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship after winning his first with Richard Childress Racing in 1985.
Charlotte Race Weekend is here! 🏁 Let’s kick things off with a Fan Quiz to test your NASCAR history knowledge. Do you know the answer?

Today, we honor NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill France Sr.
Known as “Big Bill,” France was the driving force behind the formation of NASCAR in 1948. As the sport’s founder and first president, he established a unified organization for stock car racing and helped lay the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most popular forms of motorsports.
France’s vision extended beyond the formation of NASCAR. He led the effort to build Daytona International Speedway, which opened in 1959. On February 22 of that year, the first Daytona 500 was held on the 2.5-mile superspeedway, with Lee Petty ultimately declared the winner after a dramatic photo finish.
Through his vision, determination and belief in the future of stock car racing, Bill France Sr. helped transform a regional pastime into a national sport.
