How do you put a value on nature when no one agrees on what nature is? 🌿 Ryan Ng (SG Youth Voices for Biodiversity) on why the nature we never see still needs to be counted. #AlterCOP Daily COP17 Briefing, Tue 20 Oct, 9:15AM altercop.com
Why are durians getting pricier? Because mangrove loss is starving the bats that pollinate durians! Dylan Seng (SG Youth Voices for Biodiversity) on why 55% of the economy relies on nature. #AlterCOP Daily COP17 Briefing, Mon 19 Oct, 9:20AM 🌿 altercop.com
Ponds and lakes cover a tiny slice of the planet but store carbon in their mud at rates that may rival the ocean floor, while also breathing CO2 and methane back out.
Prof. David Taylor (NUS) on the missing wetlands.

Why do so many protected areas fail after the funding arrives?
Carbon markets pay, but they often miss biodiversity goals. Flagship species rally support, until the flagship disappears and the system goes with it. Asst Prof Zeng Yiwen explains - link in bio
Can conservation pay for itself? 🐝A nature experience centre, an award-winning honeybee rescue outfit and a boutique farmstay. Clarence Chua (NTU Notable Alumni) founded all three, and he's at ASE to talk about building a business out of it.

Fibre-optic cable already in the ground can work as a dense seismic array.
The problem: it records earthquakes, traffic and noise at once, with almost no labels.

🪲 Nearly 1 in 4 described animal species is a beetle. Why?

Singapore’s tiny wildlife detectives: Dung beetles could give scientists the scoop on Singapore’s forest wildlife by helping uncover elusive species that conventional surveys struggle to detect.
Led by Assoc Prof Eleanor Slade from the Asian School of the Environment (@ntu_ase) and research fellow Ong Xin Rui, #NTUsg researchers analysed DNA preserved in the guts of dung beetles collected from Singapore’s Central Catchment Nature Reserve and detected 18 vertebrate species, including the elusive Sunda pangolin, Sunda slow loris and sambar deer.
The method could complement camera traps by revealing animals that may otherwise go undetected, while also helping researchers understand ecological relationships and assess the resilience of tropical forest ecosystems.
The team is now exploring a less invasive approach that entails swabbing beetles for traces of wildlife DNA before releasing them back into the forest. Read more: ntu.sg/DungBeetles-DNA

Major earthquakes can reshape the Earth’s crust and influence future sea-level projections, an international study led by #NTUsg scientists from the Earth Observatory of Singapore (@EOS_SG) and Asian School of the Environment (@ntu_ase) has found. Published in Communications Earth & Environment (@CommsEarth), a Nature Portfolio journal, the study shows that accounting for post-earthquake land movements could improve coastal planning and flood risk assessments across Southeast Asia. A new #NTUsg study found that 76 per cent of reef sites surveyed across the Indo-Pacific do not have the capacity to keep pace with projected sea-level rise under a high greenhouse gas emissions scenario.
The researchers also found that when relative sea level rises by more than 5.3 millimetres a year, there is a greater than 90 per cent chance that reefs will be unable to maintain their upward growth.
The study, led by scientists from the Earth Observatory of Singapore (@EOS_SG) and the Asian School of the Environment (@ntu_ase), compiled 288 ancient reef records from 92 sites across the Indo-Pacific.
