What does learning look like when it moves beyond the classroom?
For Montgomery College student Zia Khan, it looks like building AI-powered tools, exploring startups, developing self-driving software, and creating opportunities for other students to innovate.
As president of the AI Club and an organizer of RaptorHacks, Zia is putting his computer science skills into practice while helping build a community around emerging technology.
In the latest episode of MC Beyond the Classroom, Zia shares what sparked his interest in computer science, the projects he’s working on, and how he’s turning curiosity into real-world experience.

An Extraordinary Journey Starts at MC
Nick Tracy enrolled at Montgomery College after earning his GED. Unsure how he would navigate a traditional classroom, Nick discovered at MC that he could thrive academically. “Never assume something is beyond what you can achieve,” he said.
He graduated with a 4.0 GPA, became the first in his family to graduate from college, and was selected as a @TheJKCF Undergraduate Transfer Scholar.
After transferring to @Georgetown and graduating magna cum laude, he is now preparing for graduate study at the University of Cambridge as a Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholar. His research will explore trust and authenticity online, misinformation and the impact of an increasingly AI-driven internet—building on his own experience using technology to access education and opportunity.

From Montgomery College to the Vatican
For Montgomery College alumnus Juan Bastos ’81, it has taken him from the MC Art Department to an internationally recognized career—and most recently, to painting a portrait of Pope Leo XIV for the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Bastos immersed himself in campus life while a student at MC, building his skills in art, illustration, graphic design, photography, and sculpture. Today, his work can be found in private homes, public buildings, educational institutions, and corporate offices around the world.
His journey is a powerful reminder to our students: where you start can lead to extraordinary places. Where will your extraordinary journey take you?

Four voices connected to Montgomery College talk about culture, identity, and belonging. Sometimes they feel like they belong, and other times they feel like the only Latino in the room.
MC Raptor Rep & student Isabel Flores, Director of Student Affairs at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Kimberly F Jones, Ph.D., and Montgomery College's Office of Community Engagement Specialist Carlos Orbe, Jr. share their stories.

History changed forever 25 years ago today. We honor those who lost their lives in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. We honor those who sacrificed their lives to save others. We honor those who deal with the impacts of September 11 every day. We shall never forget.
Today’s Montgomery College Athletics pep rally, scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Rockville Campus, has been postponed due to a medical emergency involving a student-athlete.
We appreciate your understanding and support of Montgomery College Athletics. We will share information about a rescheduled event when it becomes available.
