.@novaramedia's YouTube had over seven million views last month, covering topics that will shape the future of humanity, like AI-risk, the new cold war with China, and the genocide in Gaza.
But to keep doing what we do we need 1,000 new financial supporters. Can you be one?

Such a great interview by @michaeljswalker w/ @SinaToossi
Informative, measured - & an assessment regarding the war with Iran the mainstream media simply won’t provide.
So proud of my brilliant colleagues. We are building something for the long term.

"Saudi is not prepared for an unconventional war in Yemen. Even with its surrogates on the ground it can at best contain or push back Houthi advances. It will not eliminate the Houthis from Yemen's North. Saudi will try to improve a bargaining position to get a better deal that will ultimately have to include the Houthis in a Yemeni framework agreement"
Pledging to implement proportional representation then ruling out a future pact based on a single disagreement is not credible.
NEW: At PMQs, Andy Burnham rules out deal with the Greens following their adoption of the Zionism motion at confefence:
Dame Harriett Baldwin: The leader of the opposition has made it crystal clear about doing deals with other parties. So will the Prime Minister make it equally clear, following the Green Party's descent into the most abhorrent anti-Semitism that he will rule out co-operating with them?
Andy Burnham: Mr. speaker, can I condemn the motion that was passed unequivocally? It is wrong. It is anti-Semitic, and this side of the House will have nothing to do with it. And we will always take the right response when it comes to any partnerships we have with other parties. We cannot support a partnership with a party that holds a position that has recently been adopted.
The Times today argues that the over 1 billion pounds being spent on PIP for teenagers would be better spent on providing free therapy for them instead.
I would be interested in seeing the arguments against.

It is, but it's also entirely predictable.
With the left having shaped the debate around Palestine, and winning major concessions from the British government, we are now in a situation where the Israel lobby is happiest: where any criticism of Israel can be presented, always, as downstream of wanting to eliminate it. Anyone who criticises it, and its record, wants it to disappear.
This is the inevitable outcome of the Zionism is Racism motion. People can talk about its longer term impacts, and the conversations it opens, which I'm open to (and I think is probably true), but it was a tactical mistake. Some agreed/many agreed with it as a statement, but wanted strategic conversations about consequences and compromises. They were often told to just 'join the Tories'.
Any party that smothers strategic questions, however strange or counter-intuitive they seem (and I don't think that applies here), will lose. Strategy exists. It's a thing. It's why some businesses fail, and others succeed. It's why some people lead countries, and others are also-rans. To talk about strategy isn't about 'optics' mattering more than principles. Rather, it's a necessary pre-cursor to achieving your objectives. If you aren't at least interested in strategy - which depends on the constant ability to accept you may be wrong about something, being constantly paranoid about being mistaken - you will lose.
So rather than de-proscribing Palestine Action, or sanctions on Israel proper, we're here instead.

Gone live with @michaeljswalker and @AaronBastani! Tune in.
Replying to @AyoCaesar
@AyoCaesar, @AaronBastani and @MichaelJSWalker will be live-streaming a Holborn & St Pancras byelection special from 9.45pm tonight.
Will Zack Polanski take Keir Starmer's old seat, in what would be the Green party's biggest challenge to Labour yet? Or will Labour's Sagal Abdi-Wali, the Camden council leader and a Starmer ally, crush the Greens' hopes of electoral success?
Tune in for analysis, special guests and news from the count: youtube.com/watch?v=9UeH93ny…

Something which makes me suspicious: People who are hyper-realist on some foreign policy issues and hyper-idealist on others. E.g thinking both 1) In the interests of peace, Ukraine should come to some compromise settlement with Russia, whether or not all their sovereign territory is returned (hyper-realist) and 2) The only acceptable outcome in the Middle East is a single secular Palestinian state where jews and Palestinians live peacefully side-by-side (hyper-idealist).

We sent @michaeljswalker to Labour conference.
I can’t recommend this enough. You see, in real time, senior government figures essentially walk back on the proscription of Palestine Action. Really important document!

Even Yvette Cooper won’t defend the ban on Palestine Action anymore.
The former home secretary and foreign secretary deflected questions about the proscription from Novara Media's Michael Walker at Labour party conference in Liverpool on Monday.
“It was her policy and she won’t defend that policy,” @michaeljswalker says on Novara Live.
IMO - this is the current best argument against (short-term) AI doom.
Even the most "AGI-pilled" people now typically acknowledge that merely making AI systems generally "smarter" won't straightforwardly translate into society-wide benefits – creating material abundance, curing diseases, improving governance – because in many areas we're not just bottlenecked by a lack of raw intelligence or explicit intellectual knowledge.
My impression is that this lesson isn't internalised to the same degree when it comes to how more intelligent machines could cause societal harms. If you need far more than raw general intelligence to cure cancer, you also need far more to create effective propaganda, let alone take over the world or eliminate the human species.

"The real problem at the moment is that the technology is intrinsically unsafe."
Stuart Russell, UC Berkeley AI professor and president of IASEAI, says we are scaling AI systems we still don't fully understand.
Making AI more powerful is not the same as making it controllable.
Safety requires understanding the systems we are building.

The "godfather of AI," Geoffrey Hinton, left Google so that he could sound the alarm about the dangers of the technology. You may disagree with him but it is just dishonest to paint all of the concerns as coming from industry plants and it's Q-anon level nonsense to paint it all as an elaborate psyop.
Spoke to @michaeljswalker on @novaramedia about my new book.
Have a listen and get a copy!

Negative polarisation is leading many to dismiss EAs/Rationalists as deluded frauds. They aren't. They're smart people who've made some significant and correct calls. However ->
The left need to move on from the cope belief that this technology is dumb. The people who made it - and who know it best - are intelligent, and have a decent record at making good calls about its potential. That includes many EAs/Rats, but also Hinton, Russel, Bengio ->
