Today, activists gathered outside UOB in Jakarta to call on major Singaporean banks to close the loopholes in their coal policies.
Our message: NO NEW COAL SHOULD MEAN NO NEW COAL.
The problem is in the details. DBS explicitly excludes captive coal-fired power plants from its coal exposure, while OCBC and UOB focus on clients in the power-generation sector — meaning coal used for industrial operations can still fall outside the headline commitment.
Southeast Asia is set to add 100+ TWh of new electricity demand by 2030. Bank policies can help decide whether that growth is powered by cleaner energy—or locked into new coal.
