BioCosmos Africa Proposes Intelligence Design at Makerere University Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. @Ssalisarah, hosted and chaired a strategic meeting with Mr. Dag Kr. Norli, CEO and Chair of BioCosmos Africa -@biocosmosafrica (BCA), together with his delegation. They discussed implications of the theory of Intelligence Design (ID) and its application. Mr. Norli explained BCA's core mission is to "promote scientific research and education concerning the origin of the universe and life, with particular emphasis on Intelligence Design." Intelligence Design is explained by Ochieng and Ndede (2025), in a book published by BioCosmos Africa as a theory that holds that certain features of the universe and life are best explained by intelligence, cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection acting on random mutation. Dr. Joel Isanga and Dr. Barbara Nerima; both scholars at CoNAS Makerere and Board Members at BioCosmos Uganda (BCU) presented the scientific rationale for ID, using DNA and irreducible complexity. As an entry point for ID to the broader community, Professor Ssali proposed a public debate to generate awareness and interest. She further urged the BioCosmos team to continue contextualising ID to real-world issues, noting that people want to see change in their lifetime rather than just debating evolutionary biology. On the introduction of new theories she acknowledged the scientists conceptualising ID, stating, "that's what universities are for – to debate knowledge." Additionally, she recognised Dr. Nerima for her contribution in a male dominated field noting that visibility of women in science can inspire young ladies to pursue scientific careers. For now, the Design will target faculty and postgraduate students to build foundational knowledge before broader rollout.

Earlier today the Vice Chancellor, represented by Professor @SsaliSarah the First Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, accompanied by Professor Henry Alinaitwe the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, hosted a team from the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (@kofihuganda). The meeting focused on partnership opportunities in health innovation, specifically the development of an AI-based research hospital, health innovation hub and biomedical capacity building. Vice Chancellor reiterated the University’s collaborative nature and appreciated the KOFIH delegation for their proposal to start in the area of training and infrastructure. Professor Alinaitwe as well commended KOFIH noting that working with them will be a great opportunity in advancing our resource mobilisation and development of funding proposals. Professor @brucekirenga, the principal - @MakerereCHS acknowledged the efforts towards establishing a health innovation hub. He said it is a good development that will support documentation of biomedical innovations that often easily fall through the cracks and go unnoticed. Mr. Juwang Baik (@juwang_Baik), the Country Representative for KOFIH acknowledged Makerere as a leading institution in Uganda, and in the region. He highlighted their readiness to work with the institution in accessing health related technology and also promised a pathway for collaboration and utilising technical experts from Korea. He was accompanied by Mr. @KavumaPrichard - Senior Project manager KOFIH. The College of Health Sciences will serve as the primary hub for the partnership with KOFIH.

We congratulate Dr. Josephine Ndagire on her election by @UN_HRC to its Advisory Committee as a member from African States. Dr Josephine Ndagire is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public and Comparative Law at @MakerereLaw. The @UN_HRC Advisory Committee is essentially the elite "think-tank" of the UN's highest human rights body (Human Rights Council, established in 1946 as the Human Rights Commission but rebranded in 2006). It was established to provide specialized, research based expertise on cross-cutting thematic issues, such as, rights impacts of Artificial Intelligence, climate change, and socio-economic justice. Members are elected on a geographically distributed basis (five seats designated for African States).

The Counseling and Guidance Centre led by Mr Henry Nsubuga held an engagement with support from @MCFMakerere themed "Mental Health Hygiene". The engagement was officially opened by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance & Administration) represented by @EdBbaale. Prof. @EdBbaale noted that mental health is one of the neglected areas of health. He said that in this dynamic environment, whether student or staff, we need the support of Counseling and Guidance Directorate. Prof. @EdBbaale said that if you suffer a mental or psychological breakdown, then you can not deliver on the university's strategic direction. Mr Henry Nsubuga noted that we must be in our best state of mind to serve. 'We can not give what we do not have', Mr Nsubuga said.

Delivering the Keynote, Professor Sabatho Nyamsenda started on a lighter note saying he notices “Nyerere is being Ugandanised” and later presented a critique of the current state of Pan-Africanism, arguing that it has been co-opted by ruling elites. He highlighted 1960-1980 as the period when the challenges for Pan-Africanism began. He explained that it was around this time that Pan-Africanism was snatched away from the masses and became a state project. Currently, the ideology exists in two forms: Boardroom and Street Pan-Africanism. Professor Nyamsenda joined Mwalimu and urged the youth to consider leading the struggle for a better Africa. #JnlcSymposium2026
