📢 Genomics & oncology HCPs 📢 It’s time to talk to children about cancer & hereditary risk I attended the Parenting with Cancer Conference, and the insights were invaluable. Huge thanks to Caroline @FruitflyC for her transformative work on facilitating tough conversations with families! Key takeaways: 1. Discussing cancer or cancer risk with children is tough but essential. 2. Starting the conversation is often the hardest part – guidance and reassurance are crucial. 3. Honesty is appreciated by children, who will ask questions, sometimes in unexpected situations. 4. Several organizations offer resources, support, and training, not just for parents but also for HCPs! Resources: 1. @FruitFly offers a Coaching programe for parents with cancer, a "train the trainer" program for parents, and training for HCPs. More info: a) Parents with cancer: parentingwithcancer.org/ b) HCP training: fruitflycollective.com/new-p… c) Upcoming @fruitfly "The Family Gene Kit" new resource in collaboration with @RMPartnersNHS @ImperialNHS @StMarksGenomics @LynchSyndromeUK - Stay tuned! To help families to speak about hereditary cancers 2. @LOHA_health Supports parents in talking about hereditary cancer and helps families with children's mental health challenges to develop emotional intelligence and manage anxiety. 3. @RuthStraussFdn Provides support and resources for families facing incurable cancer and offers training for HCPs 4. Family Centred Cancer Care @semple_cherith intervention: Supports families when a significant adult has incurable cancer and has caring responsibilities. Website: ulster.ac.uk/research/topic/… For free HCP eLearning resource register account fccceoled.com 5. Free Parenting with Cancer workshops at @futuredreamss to explore the challenges of parenting whilst living with cancer and navigating family life when it becomes disrupted. In-person momence.com/s/101356827 Online momence.com/s/101357023 6. CancerCareMap cancercaremap.org : If unsure, there is a free online directory of over 4,300 cancer support services in the UK, which includes resources for families and emotional support. I highly recommend attending these impressive conferences. Hearing from so many people about their experiences with cancer was truly impactful. We have much to learn to better support families through these challenges! #CancerCare #FamilySupport #Oncology #Genomics

We have seen your FEB '24 HSJ article @SeanDugganMHN. Thank you for highlighting the implications of not intervening to support young people to manage their mental health. The impact on young people, parents and society is enormous, we need new approaches.

LOHA are creating CURE Connection, understanding, resilience and empathy. We are giving parents the chance to help young people acquire the skills for a lifetime of good mental health 9/10

LOHA are using digital technology to support parents to help children and young people build better relationships with their parents, siblings and friends. We are facilitating the skill development for young people to build connection, understanding, empathy and resilience 8/10
17
Learning to adapt to newexperiences, makes young people more resilient because they can respond to change. Resilience is about adapting to changing circumstances. 7/10
15
Through understanding and empathy, we grow trust with others. Put curiosity, understanding and empathy together, and this creates a growth mindset and experience develops. This allows young people to learn to adapt and change effectively in new relationships and situations 6/10
15
Curiosity builds connection. Learning to understand others, their motivations and experience builds empathy. Empathy is recognising and acknowledging the emotions the other person is feeling, and trying to understand, without immediately trying to solve or remove it. 5/10
11
We do not encourage people, young or old, to be curious about their own reactions, values and beliefs or those of others’, we jump to conclusions – we take short cuts – it’s easier and quicker. In the end however, it distances us from the people we care about the most. 4/10
12
The problem is we don’t teach children, young people, or adults the fundamental skills of building good relationships, of managing their emotions and understanding the association between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. 3/10
