Who’s a Veteran you’re looking out for this Lung Cancer Awareness Month? Today, LCFA took our lung cancer screening message across the country through a satellite media tour from New York City. We were joined by veteran and lung cancer advocate Gerry Spencer and Dr. Martin Edelman, a retired Navy Medical Corps captain and chair of LCFA’s Scientific Advisory Board. Here’s what we want every Veteran to know. 👊 1. If you’re eligible, get screened, even if you "feel fine." Low-dose CT scans find the cancer before symptoms appear, when it’s most treatable. Dr. Edelman shares that lung cancer screening is underutilized. 2. Know your exposures. Burn pits, Agent Orange, and asbestos are a few types. Desert Storm Veteran and LCFA advocate Michelle Alarid remembers “the burning oil that I breathed in.” Every Veteran enrolled in VA health care can get a free toxic exposure screening – share a 5–10 minute conversation with your provider about what you may have been exposed to. 3. If you’re diagnosed, know your biomarkers. Biomarker testing can match lung cancer to the treatment most likely to work. For Michelle, it led to a targeted therapy that has let her keep living an active life. 4. The VA can be a partner in making screening work better. At the MINNEAPOLIS VA MEDICAL CENTER, a new coordination program increased rates of expert follow-up for high-risk lung nodules from 45% to 100% and cut wait times for results in half. The VA’s National Center for Lung Cancer Screening says that every VA site should bring community-care screening into its program. Get screened. Then tell another Veteran to do the same. Biomarker testing can find changes like EGFR, KRAS, and PD-L1, and many point to treatments that didn’t exist 10 years ago. That’s The Science of More Options. Follow along this #LungCancerAwarenessMonth: bit.ly/4feZ3hn

Today on National Lung Health Day, #crypto donors just pushed LCFA past $1M in crypto gifts! We cannot thank you enough. $1M = years of funded lung cancer research. Our grants have drawn 13X return in follow-on research funding. More time for researchers = more time for patients = more Halloweens with their kids, more game nights with friends, more time to spend with people we love. donate.gg/charities/lung-can… @donatedotgg

🇺🇸 An estimated 900,000 Veterans are eligible for lung cancer screening. Screening only helps if people know it’s there. If you served, or you love someone who did, share this. It could lead to the screening they’ve earned. 🎗️ Check eligibility: bit.ly/4e9SJd3

My friend Lori would have been 68 yesterday. In 2001, she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Her doctor told her that her cancer was inoperable. Being a nurse, and knowledgeable about patient care, she didn’t stop at a second opinion – she got a third, then a fourth… She saw that lung cancer was the leading cause of cancer death, and she also saw that despite that, research for lung cancer was underfunded. Using her southern charm along with her knowledge from being a nurse and a patient, she went head to head with politicians and public leaders to advocate for lung cancer to get the attention and funding it deserved. So in 2007, we co-founded Lung Cancer Foundation of America together with David Sturges, another patient advocate. Our mission today is the same: to improve survival for people with lung cancer by funding transformative science. I hope she can see the researchers we've funded and the cumulative impact of the chances we took on those bright, bold, young minds. Lori also gave her time and attention to anyone who needed it, from patients to caregivers and gave them hope. When Lori was diagnosed, she hoped to see her daughters graduate high school. She saw them graduate college and danced at her youngest daughter’s wedding. She passed away too soon in 2013. We’re still funding lung cancer research - for Lori, for everyone like her, for everyone who has and loves the “Lori” in their life. We miss you. - Kim Norris, President of Lung Cancer Foundation of America

Jane Perlmutter’s PD-L1 score came back at 20%, but immunotherapy worked for her anyway. Her story is on our Ask Me Anything podcast. 🎧 Make it a double feature: 1️⃣ Start with Hope With Answers. Dr. Julie Brahmer and Colette Smith explain what a PD-L1 score is and what it means for lung cancer treatment. 2️⃣ Then listen to Ask Me Anything. Advocates Jane Perlmutter and James Hiter talk about the experience of immunotherapy based on PD-L1 scoring.
