"We must remember Sept. 11 because it changed us. It changed New York City. It changed our state. It changed our nation. It changed the very nature of the National Guard. It changed everything." – Maj. Gen. Ray Shields More than 14,000 New York National Guard members took part in the response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In the years that followed, the National Guard played a prominent role throughout the Global War on Terror alongside every branch of the military. Today we honor everyone lost on that day and every first responder and Guard member who answered the call.
