Erin L Thompson's investigation into how the renowned US scholar Mary Slusser smuggled hundreds of Nepali artefacts out of the country in the 1960s and 70s has had a response unlike anything we've seen at @HimalSouthasian in a while.
Erin put in years of chasing to expose Slusser's theft and crime, and to document the damage done to many of the objects as well as to the traditions they belonged to. This story should put an end to the argument that Western museums and collectors are better custodians of others' heritage than the original communities themselves.

A year after its Gen Z uprising, Nepal faces a struggle not only for democracy and human rights but for climate survival. Wen Stephenson reports from Nepal. thenation.com/article/enviro…
In January 2025, the Trump administration cut off funding for a long-running natural hazards program that aimed to identify and monitor landslide hotspots in Nepal. While the program the administration cut would not have been able to prevent the disaster that happened this past week, it represented a first step towards making those kinds of protections possible in a future where they are going to be needed more.

We were warned. Four months ago top Himalayan experts reported the rate of ice loss doubling since 2000, with glaciers shrinking by fifth since 1990. “This isn’t a distant problem”they said. “It’s happening in real time”. They predicted “catastrophe”.

Rescuers in Nepal and China are still battling to locate thousands of people missing days after a deadly, tsunami-like wall of water and debris swept through the Himalayan region.
The number of missing has soared close to 3,000, latest figures from both countries show, with 633 bodies recovered -- and reports of some dead possibly swept downstream as far away as India

Absolutely unreal: the daughter of two American citizens who are missing following the Nepal-Tibet floods has received radio silence from the US Embassy Nepal, the US Embassy China, and stateside Trump admin officials.
U.S. citizens Ramesh Sharma and Neelam Sharma were making a religious pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a peak in Tibet.
Shortly after their border crossing, a towering torrent of water, rock and mud tore through the same Himalayan corridor. Both are missing. nbcnews.com/world/asia/nepal…

Arjun Poudel, a Nepali journalist for the @kathmandupost, reports his own tragedy:
"I watched my village disappear in an instant...
My eldest aunt was swept away. So was her son, my dai Madhu, and his wife. My other aunt — gone too, they told me. Her grandson Sijan and his wife, caught in the same water. His own son and daughter-in-law, unreachable, unaccounted for. My maternal uncle had gone out that morning to cut grass for the cattle. He never came back."
