Before I visited Pennsylvania, everyone warned me that Philadelphia people are the toughest, most impatient people in America.
I believed them until I walked toward the front door of a Wawa gas station.
I was still forty feet away in the parking lot, walking between rows of cars.
A massive construction worker in steel-toe boots, carrying a twenty-four-ounce coffee in one hand and a paper-wrapped hoagie in the other, pushed open the glass door to leave. Then he saw me.
He stopped. He planted his boot against the bottom of the door. And he waited.
Forty feet is a very long distance when a grown man is holding a door for you in the wind.
In Japan, to make a stranger wait carries great shame. So I broke into that awkward half-jog every man performs when he wishes to show gratitude without looking like he is fleeing a crime.
"Go ahead, boss," he said as I passed.
Ten minutes later, as I walked out with my own sandwich, I saw an elderly woman locking her car thirty feet away.
I planted my foot against the glass. I held the door.
Another man behind me held the inner door. Within seconds we had formed an impromptu honor guard of grumpy men holding glass doors in complete silence.
Philadelphia may boo Santa Claus.
But inside the three-foot radius of a Wawa doorway, they have the manners of the imperial court.

De La Soul gets the full Pop the Trunk treatment. with one seat empty this week (and a suspect excuse behind it), the crew heads back to Amityville to trace the group from pause tapes to one of the most defiant catalogs rap has ever produced. Along the way, a firsthand account of how they really got signed, a local's view of the Long Island they came up in, and a tribute to Dave that lands close to home.

33 years ago today, KRS One released "Return of the Boom Bap" on Jive Records.
with his stature in hip-hop, Kris could’ve turned to practically anyone he wanted, but he chose the hip hop purist's favorite, DJ Premier, as his main collaborator for this solo debut. (there’s 5 producers involved: one joint comes from Norty Cotto, two from Kid Capri, Showbiz did “Sound of da Police”, alongside Premier's five tracks, Kris contributes four himself, with the two collaborating on another)
one of KRS’s best records, it began a triptych of three great albums under his solo name which re-established KRS as the quintessential MC.

33 years ago today, Souls of Mischief released their debut LP, 93 Til Infinity, on Jive/Zomba.
one of my all-time favorite records.
The Source canonized it in 1998 by naming it one of the “100 Greatest Albums of All-Time”. the title track is one of the greatest record flips ever. I spent most of the Fall of 93 wandering around Phily, listening to 93 'til Infinity. 30+ years later, it still triggers long-expired memories. sometimes it’s good to remember what it felt like when you thought you had the potential to conquer the world.

33 years ago today, De La Soul releases their 3rd LP, Buhloone Mindstate, on Tommy Boy/Warner Brothers. De La were increasingly bitter about their situation with Tommy Boy, and the Native Tongues collective was (possibly?) collapsing. It’s not a particularly happy album, and judging from the lyrics, the group didn’t sound like they were in a good place when they recorded it. De La sounds disillusioned with the music industry throughout the record. all that said Buhloone Mindstate ranks in my top three of De La’s albums and is still underappreciated by far too many. 3 decades later, Buhloone Mindstate is regarded as the De La project that tried-and-true fans of the group consider its best. It holds up as well as all of their legacy material, and its recent addition to streaming services has allowed younger kids to lisyen and learn. Its quality still endures, even as the sentiments that drove its creation have faded. genuine emotion and sentiment expressed in music have no statute of limitations, and few groups channeled their emotions like De La did with Buhloone Mindstate.
