Cornucopia of Canadian Ingratitude Thanksgiving, October 12, 2026 Thanks for the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program, for providing tens of thousands of labourers from the Global South to grow our food in dangerous and exploitative conditions. Thanks for the misleading notion of the family farm, perpetuated by racist advertising that does not reflect the Mexican and Caribbean workers toiling in the fields. Thanks for the repatriation clause in seasonal migrant farmworkers' contracts, which silences workers who fear being sent back to their home countries. Thanks for excluding farmworkers from collective bargaining in Ontario, thereby keeping the table tilted to the benefit of agribusiness employers, who perpetually pay minimum wage. Thanks for the Coroner's Office, for never using public resources to conduct an inquest into any of the numerous deaths of migrant farmworkers across Ontario. Thanks for the Employment Insurance Act, which ensures that seasonal migrant farmworkers pay into a system from which they cannot receive regular benefits. Thanks for the denial of basic tenant protections to migrant farmworkers living on farms in Ontario, allowing employers to stack them in inadequate and overcrowded bunkhouses. Thanks for a lack of meaningful pesticide oversight and enforcement, for ensuring that production and profits are prioritized over the protection of people. Thanks for a scheme that denies migrant farmworkers a path to permanent residence, no matter how many seasons they return, reminding them they are good enough to work but not good enough to stay.
