Iran’s authorities executed at least 34 people in connection to the Jan 2026 uprising after unfair trials. At least 20 others are at imminent risk of protest-related executions after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentences. Many more remain at risk. amnesty.org/en/documents/mde…

For the second consecutive week, a UN Special Rapporteur is joining #NoToExecutionsTuesdays in solidarity with political prisoners resisting Iran’s execution machine across 66 prisons for 143 weeks. This week, @SRfreedex_LMG is joining the global call to #StopExecutionsInIran.
I am joining a solidarity action with political prisoners in Iran participating in #NoToExecutionTuesdays. At 12 am Iran time, I'm going to start a 24-hour #hungerstrike #Iran #stopexecutions #abolishdeathpenalty The scale of Iran’s use of the death penalty for political reasons is alarming. Amnesty International recorded at least 2,159 executions in 2025, the highest annual figure it has recorded in the country since 1981. In 2026, at least 34 people have been executed in connection with the January protests, including five in just one week between 30 September and 5 October. Information I have received also reveals a particularly troubling dimension for my mandate. At least 46 political prisoners and protesters reportedly executed since 19 March 2026: 37 arrested during protests and nine targeted in connection with alleged opposition affiliation. More than 100 others are reportedly on death row. Offences such as baghi (armed rebellion), moharebeh (enmity against god) and efsad-e fel-arz (corruption on earth) are being used in cases where protest, political expression and alleged opposition affiliation are intertwined with capital charges. History makes these warning signs impossible to ignore. In 1988, around 30,000 political prisoners were executed or forcibly disappeared in one of the darkest chapters of Iran’s recent history. Former UN Special Rapporteur Javaid Rehman subsequently concluded that the summary, arbitrary and extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances amounted to crimes against humanity. Iran must immediately halt executions, commute death sentences, review cases that fail to meet fair-trial standards and investigate allegations of torture. Political opinion, criticism, peaceful protest and association must never become capital offences.

@IranHrm published a report documenting the revival of a decade-old judicial case against 26 Baha'i citizens in Shiraz, alongside a wave of heavy sentences against Baha'is in Tehran, Karaj and elsewhere. According to the report, the Shiraz case had ended in a definitive acquittal by the Court of Appeal of Fars Province in January 2023, but was reopened after the Chief Justice of Fars Province objected under Article 477 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. A hearing was held on 11 October 2026 before the same judge who issued the initial verdict. Iran HRM argued these practices violate Articles 14, 15, 18 and 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). iran-hrm.com/2026/10/08/iran… #BahaiRights #Iran #HumanRights

Iran: The arbitrary executions of five young men - Ali Hemmati Sistanian, Alireza Raisi, Alireza Sepahi, Majid Nikandish and Siavash Jamshidi Kheirabadi – serves as another chilling reminder of how the Iranian authorities weaponize the death penalty to render the cost of dissent so high that it terrorizes the population into silence and deters further mass uprisings challenging their repressive decades-long rule. amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

Abhorrent public executions are used in dictatorships like Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea. We might not be surprised by the savagery of the Mullahs or by dictatorships which routinely resort to barbarism. But such macabre and grotesque spectacles should have no place in a democracy like the United States. In 1849 Charles Dickens wrote to The Times after witnessing a public execution and said “I stand astounded and appalled by the wickedness it exhibits.” Britain banned public executions in 1868. The death penalty has been banned in all cases since 1998. In the case of Iran, tomorrow’s “No to Execution Tuesdays”campaign will be marked by political prisoners across 66 Iranian prisons who have staged weekly hunger strikes demanding the abolition of the death penalty. Gina Romero, UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, will join tomorrow's hunger strike campaign and has shared this video: xitter.cf/Ginitastar/status/2109… If we truly believe in the Greek, Roman, Judaea-Christian values which have shaped our civilisation, we must be clear in spelling out what distinguishes us from barbarism- public executions being a very clear example.
