AI vs. Humans in Project Management: Technological Replacement or Intelligent Symbiosis? 🌟 AI in project management may be less a question of replacement - and more a question of relationship. A study featured in IPMA Project Perspectives examines 50 project management scenarios and identifies three modes of human–AI interaction: 💡Embedding - humans lead, while AI supports specific tasks 💡Copilot - humans and AI work collaboratively 💡Agent - AI takes a more autonomous role, with humans supervising and evaluating One finding is particularly interesting. Human experts’ responses were concentrated mainly around Copilot mode. When the same scenarios were assessed by GenAI systems, their responses leaned further towards Agent mode, assigning a greater role to AI. That difference raises a question that goes beyond technology. As AI becomes more involved in planning, analysis, documentation and decision support, the issue is not simply “Can AI do this?” It is also “Where should autonomy end, and human accountability begin?” 👉 How is your organization defining that boundary? It is with deep sadness that IPMA mourns the passing of Gerrit Koch, IPMA Honorary Fellow, former President of IPMA Netherlands, and a dedicated member of our global project management community. For more than two decades, Gerrit made an extraordinary contribution to the profession, helping shape the IPMA International Competence Baseline (ICB 3.0), developing IPMA Delta, and mentoring generations of project professionals. As Prof. Dr. Mladen Vukomanović, President of IPMA, reflected: “Gerrit was one of those rare people whose legacy cannot be measured only by what he achieved, but by the lives he touched along the way. He helped build the foundations of IPMA through his remarkable work on the ICB and IPMA Delta, but what I will remember most is his unwavering belief in people, especially young project professionals. We have lost a remarkable colleague, a generous mentor, and, above all, a wonderful human being.” Through IPMA Netherlands, IPMA extends its deepest condolences to Gerrit's family, friends, and colleagues.
