Employees of Shedd Aquarium voted more than 75% Yes to form their union, Shedd Workers United/AFSCME! Tonight we celebrate, tomorrow we get to work making Shedd a better place for all. 🎉

Workers then marched together to deliver a letter to Shedd CEO Bridget Coughlin requesting the aquarium’s voluntary recognition of their union. If she refuses, they will vote in a union election in the coming weeks.

Like many workers at the Shedd Aquarium, Julianna Quiroz, a guest relations ambassador, was forced to attend mandatory meetings where management tried to frighten and intimidate workers in an attempt to dissuade them from forming a union.
Today Julianna watched as the Worker Freedom of Speech Act—a bill backed by @afscme31, the IL AFL-CIO, and other unions in Illinois—was signed into law. Now, such meetings are illegal—and management will face the consequences for holding them.

Brittney Thompson is learning programs coordinator at Shedd Aquarium. "Unionization democratizes the workplace for the benefit of all staff," Brittney says. "A Shedd union would allow staff to work for new futures at Shedd and new futures for the Chicago workforce!"

Our two labor chairs in the General Assembly, Senator Robert Peters and Assistant Majority Leader Marcus Evans, were out with @ilcwuafscme at the Shedd standing up to union busting.
In Illinois, we say 'no' to union busting - including captive audience meetings.

We greatly appreciate your leadership and standing with us, @senpetersil!
Thank you Commissioner @AnthonyJQuezada for your support!
Solidarity with the workers at the @shedd_aquarium! As a lifelong Chicagoan, I am ashamed that management at the Shedd is engaging in an anti-union campaign. Don’t ruin the reputation of this great cultural & scientific institution - respect the workers! Chicago is a union town.
Thank you @CitizenActionIL and Executive Director @JulieSampson12 for your support! ✊
Proud to stand with @ILWCUAFSCME outside the @shedd_aquarium. These workers deserve a voice on the job. Solidarity!

Today more than a dozen lawmakers stood beside workers and demanded that management end its anti-union campaign. Another 150 elected officials from federal, state and local government signed on to a letter saying management should respect employees’ rights to organize freely.

Shedd Aquarium workers are blowing the whistle on management’s aggressive anti-union campaign.
Shedd leadership has threatened workers, required employees to attend captive-audience meetings, torn down pro-union literature and more.
