Empowering Communities. Preserving Nature. Transforming Livelihoods. Bringing science closer to society, IIT Kharagpur organised a Stakeholder Interaction and Knowledge Dissemination Workshop under the DST-SEED-supported project aimed at strengthening sustainable livelihoods among tribal communities in Mayurbhanj, Odisha. The workshop commenced with an address by Prof. Jayanta Mukhopadhyay, Dean (Strategy and Analytics), and was organised by an interdisciplinary IIT Kharagpur team comprising Dr. Sayak Roychowdhury (Project PI), Prof. Bhagirath Behera (Joint PI), Prof. Soumya Kanti Ghosh (Co-PI), Prof. Pulak Mishra (Co-PI), and Dr. Pritha Datta (Co-PI). The deliberations brought together Shri Sumit Kar, IFS, Deputy Director, Simlipal South Wildlife Division, various district officials, scientists, NGO representatives, grassroots entrepreneurs and community stakeholders. From indigenous knowledge and biodiversity conservation to mushroom cultivation, integrated farming, renewable energy and rural entrepreneurship, the workshop explored how scientific interventions can create sustainable economic opportunities while preserving local ecosystems. Beyond Awareness, Towards a Campus That Cares | World Mental Health Day 2026 At IIT Kharagpur, student wellbeing is more than a commitment—it is a shared responsibility. Under the leadership and guidance of Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, the Institute continues to place students’ mental health and holistic wellbeing at the heart of its campus priorities. Marking World Mental Health Day, Prof. Arun Chakraborty, Dean of Student Wellbeing, emphasised the importance of nurturing a compassionate and inclusive campus where every individual feels heard, understood and supported. A symbolic balloon release marked the occasion. Organised by SETU Counselling Centre, the observance featured 11 student-created short films exploring mental health beyond illness and diagnosis. SETU also presented its three-year comparative report, highlighting its journey through counselling, outreach and training. In a remarkable gesture of care, SETU undertook the initiative of reaching out to 16,500 students with personalised wellbeing cards. The G-Sec Welfare Team worked tirelessly through the night, with support from the Institute's Security Section, to ensure that the cards reached students across the campus. 16,500 students.
