Speedwork can be exciting. Running scenic trails provides its own pleasure, but tracks can have a level of activity that can stimulate you. There are good reasons to train on a track. You can't get hit by someone in a car checking their cell phone. #RunWithHal

In order to run the hard weekend workouts, you need rest days before and after. Don't be afraid to take days off. Rest sometimes is best. #RunWithHal

The Carleton College cross-country team in 1950, my sophomore year. We only got 3rd in the Midwest Conference, and I finished somewhere back in the pack. But we would improve (see above). Later this fall Carleton will host the Division III NCAA Championships. GO KNIGHTS!

Many believe they must train hard all the time. Yet elites with the ability to run 4:00 miles, do some training at 8:00 pace or slower. #RunWithHal

Long runs get you used to the stress of lifting your feet nearly 5,000 times an hour. Long runs build confidence in your ability to succeed. #RunWithHal

20 miles is the peak distance used in most marathon programs, including mine. But once you reach 16 miles, you're in long-run territory. #RunWithHal

Stepback weeks are essential if you want to train without injury, or the dead feeling that comes with overtraining. Don’t fear rest. #RunWithHal

For peak performance, train to just under the point where your body would break down if you went further. But that's not always easy to do. #RunWithHal

Adopt defensive running strategies. For a long running career, determine what activities cause you to become injured, then avoid them. #RunWithHal

Injuries are less common than non-runners think, but it can be frustrating to put in several months training only to be slowed by injury. #RunWithHal
