A good reason to poke @CaitShim once again for an API to read the account name from within an account. (call it organizations.DescribeThisAccount). IAM account aliases are a poor substitute for it. #awswishlist

The 5-day, 40-hour work week is a human invention.
100 years ago, many leaders demanded longer hours over 6 days. Then they learned people were more effective working less.
We've made little progress since the 1980s. It's time to shorten the work week.

Good thread. I'll add one more thing. As an engineer, you have your hands on the keyboard. Make things better *while* working on those features. Add time in your estimates for it, if you need cover. You have all the power. Stop asking for permission.

AWS CloudFormation now supports accounts, OUs, and policies from AWS Organizations. Now you can easily manage your organization using IaC as stacks in CloudFormation @AWSCloudFormer.

popular opinion: don't let people who make statements using "all" and "no exceptions" anywhere near your engineering decisions
A little bit thrilled and a little bit scared that I managed to convert a DynamoDB CreateTable from Go SDK call to CLI command first try. What is happening to me?

The Staff Engineer's Prayer: Grant me the courage to change what I can, the serenity to accept what I can't, and the wisdom to maintain healthy keyboard posture either way
I love projects that make me feel smarter than I am. ocsf/ocsf-server is written in Elixir, a language I have never seen other than a brief exposure to Erlang 15 years ago, but they made things clear enough that I could try a small change and have it work second try. 🙏
Today, for the first time ever, I remembered that you iterate keys+values in a Python dict using .items(). I say "remember" in that I typed it, thought "do I actually know how to do that?", googled it, and realized I had gotten it right. 🎉 It's the little things.

From the genre of emails that got out of hand, my thoughts on why I think most people should spend more time writing (writing prose for humans, that is).

In my early 20s, I thought sleeping only for four hours a day and working 80+ hours a week was fine. I have two chronic diseases and I rely on meds now. Don’t compromise your sleep and health for a job even if you’re the founder.

My promotion to VP/DE became official on March, 1. Coincidentally, on that day, I also ran across this article, which really resonated with me. I'm going to use this thread to explain why.

A good rule of thumb is whether you'll still appreciate having worked those extra hours in twenty years time. Sometimes the answer is yes, because some opportunities are worth it, but ask it every time.

1/ There is a HUGE difference between working extra hours for a PERSONAL goal or win and doing so for someone else’s monetary gain.
I have worked ridiculous hours once in my life, when I was writing DevOps for Dummies, because I knew that would create new opportunities for me…
