Restaurants that follow the dark practice of placing packaged water on every table are not called out enough!
It's not free. It's not good for the environment.
And it only works because of social pressure.
Nobody wants to be the one at the table who says "can we just get filtered water?" in front of relatives.
Restaurants bank on that discomfort.
They place the bottle, wait for you to open it out of habit, and let your ego cover the cost.
That's not hospitality.
That's psychological manipulation with a price tag.
Ask first. Or stop pretending this is good service.
The most infuriating 90 seconds on an Indian National Highway:
The Toll Plaza FASTag scanner failure.
You recharge your FASTag with ₹2,000 before leaving home.
Your banking app confirms: "Active, sufficient Balance."
You drive into the dedicated FASTag lane at 40 km/h.
The automatic boom barrier stays down.
A red warning light flashes: "Tag Not Readable / Tag Blacklisted."
You reverse 2 feet, sensor tries again.. stays red.
Within 15 seconds, 8 commercial trucks and SUVs line up behind you, leaning on their pressure horns.
The toll attendant walks out of the glass booth holding a handheld scanner with a cracked screen.
He taps your windshield twice:
"Sir, tag blacklist dikha raha hai. Server error hoga."
You show your live phone screen: "Bhaiya, ₹1,850 balance hai, just check the wallet."
Attendant shrugs with complete indifference:
"Rules are rules, sir. Either pay double toll in cash: ₹220 instead of ₹110, or back your car out against 8 trucks."
Standing with traffic screaming behind you, you hand over a ₹500 note and pay double cash penalty purely because government toll software failed to ping a private bank server.
We spent thousands of crores automating toll plazas to eliminate human corruption.
Now we pay a 100% cash penalty whenever the NHAI server takes a coffee break.
What’s the most ridiculous experience at a highway toll booth over a functional FASTag?

Nothing will happen to him because there is no value of a common citizen in our country.

The @timesofindia has come out with the sarkari defense against @reporters_co investigation without citing the story or it's findings.
It's correspondent Siddhartha Dutta reached out to one of our writers yesterday to find holes in our investigation on behalf of the govt without disclosing what he was attempting - mounting an argument on behalf of the ECI against TRC.
Its ironic that the @ceorajsthan's tweet and TOI's own report prove the SIR has been flawed in the state.
Both the state and central voter roll when updated at the same time should have found the same voters alive, regardless of the voter base it started with. Because both ECI and state commission claim to have ground verified each voter.
You can't have a person declared dead on one list and alive on the other at the same time.
How can the same official find a voter dead for one list and literally days later find her alive for the other voter list.
In general, the legacy newsrooms who have thousand times more budgets than tiny orgs such as @reporters_co should not feel threatened by citing news organisation's work they are trying to diss. We are in different though overlapping businesses. One is in journalism, the other in media and advertising. Readers know who is doing which.
Nearly 2 lakh people declared dead in ECI’s SIR exercise in Rajasthan are found alive in the roll prepared by the State for ongoing panchayat elections.

Yesterday in Iowa, a wrong way police chase ended with two innocent people dead after a poorly timed and poorly executed PIT maneuver pit innocent drivers at risk. The Iowa media won't show the moment of impact, even though Iowa DOT doesn't require censorship. But I will.

This is not a restaurant. It is an airplane. Over 30 people get up, mill about with plates, serve food in the aisle, eat, and talk loudly — all while other passengers simply want to sit, rest, and travel in peace. Turn an airplane — with 180 strangers on board — into a private wedding buffet: that is the problem. The crew cannot get through. Passengers cannot reach the restrooms. Children cannot sleep. And what if there were turbulence or an emergency? Good luck. An airplane is a shared space. Your freedom ends where someone else's seat begins.

Respectfully disagree with @rammadhav_ piece in IE today.
1. It was not a “leaked” video, it was on ITBP’s official YT channel, withdrawn later.
2. I don’t remember moratoriums on patrolling pre-2020. Buffer zones are a totally new concept, earlier India could patrol the “undemarcated” and “undefined” areas along LAC to assert territorial claim, now areas in Eastern Ladakh (Galwan, Finger area etc)are a no-go zone. Same playbook is repeating in Arunachal Pradesh.

49 out of 50 top most polluted cities in the world are in India right now, with Bhatinda, Punjab being the most polluted with AQI 939. Delhi is at the 21st spot with AQI 424. Most of these cities are concentrated in Northern India.
Stay informed, stay safe. Keep checking your local air quality and take necessary precautions.

When the last several Harry Potter books were released, we had midnight book launches attended by millions. Children, in some cases very young, finished these 700 & 800 page books in a single day. And now people are telling me I made it up, that this couldn’t ever have happened.

On Thursday I wrote about the 2014 injunction Russell Brand obtained against a woman who accused him of assault.
I've now obtained the final order. It's breathtaking.
She had no lawyer. No trial. Yet she was silenced for life - even barred from speaking to the police.

Ashish Shelar’s idea of beautifying Bandra, apparently, is spending public money on oversized, ornamental installations while much of the neighbourhood continues to struggle with broken footpaths, encroachments and basic civic infrastructure.
Bandra needs proper footpaths, better roads and functioning civic infrastructure. Not ugly vanity projects dressed up as beautification.
Who is asking for these projects, who is approving them, and who is being held accountable for how public money is spent?
