Are you a success?
I'm collecting stories about how our definitions of success change over time—and the gap between achievement and feeling successful.
I'd love your perspective. Take my short survey:

Cracked Open: On Labels
The Unitarian minister asked everyone to identify their religious beliefs.
Atheists stood. Christians stood. Agnostics stood.
One person sat.
"What are you?" she asked me.
"I don't know."
"Would everyone who doesn't know what they are, please stand."
Cracked Open: On Love
Russ rarely says "I love you."
He never grew up hearing those words.
But he'll fix your stairs or repair your fireplace.
It's his own language of love.
Do you know someone who says "I love you" without ever saying it?
Cracked Open: On Being Right
I like being right. I'm pretty good at it.
For years, I thought winning arguments was a strength.
Then my wife told me that people sometimes left our parties in tears.
Being right was not always right.
Had a major breakthrough about death today.
I fret about uncertainty. Will I ever become a successful writer? Will my son and his wife get pregnant? Will my health hold up? 100s of uncertainties.
There is only one thing in my life that's certain: my death.
Why fret about that?
Every time we meet with our financial planner, I start fretting about death and money. Will we have enough over the long haul? And how long is the long haul?
Susanna makes a good case for dating content.

I love Selye and these guides are great.
Only thing I would add: get a dog or a cat.
Tips to help manage stress and cultivate resiliency from the Handbook of Lifestyle Medicine available at Healthy Learning Publishing or Amazon. 📕
Check out the list from Dr. Hans Selye. ✔️
What would you add to his recommendations for living wisely? 🤔

Great metaphor for every human interaction.
"I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg.
There is seven-eighths of it underwater
for every part that
shows."

What a gift!
There is something valuable about being able to step away from the usual routine and spend time learning with others.
Over two days at Harvard Medical School, participants will have the opportunity to learn from experts, discuss real-world situations, try out practical approaches, and share perspectives with one another.
For me, that interaction is what makes this teaching experience meaningful.

Marketing guy talk, but he's really talking about his brand. You only get a few words in this life, and he figured out his: soft toughness. Cool.
Cracked Open: On Fear
Russ was terrified of attending his first Emotions Anonymous meeting.
For 3 weeks, he only made it to the parking lot.
But he finally went in and continued for 50 years.
Sometimes courage begins in a parking lot.
Although we are all wonderfully unique, we are also very, very similar. I know that if I feel plagued with feelings of not being enough, other people feel it, or have felt it too. They can connect with stories about how that shows up for me.

Cracked Open: On Spanking
Russ used to spank his son, often in anger.
One day, after a spanking, his son looked up at him and asked:
"Feel better now?"
Russ never spanked him again.
Cracked Open: On Being Enough
Russ built hundreds of things during his career. Homes, barns, staircases.
For years, he refused to drive past the houses he'd built.
He was afraid they'd fallen down.
That's what believing you're not good enough can do to you.
For the next 30 days, I'll be sharing one post each morning from my book, "Cracked Open: What Happens When There's No Small Talk."
These posts come from more than 20 years of conversations with my old friend Russ.
Join me every morning at 7:30 Central.
No small talk.
