💷 With global energy and fuel prices driving inflation, the Bank of England's decision to increase the base rate to 4% is not unexpected.
But it will make life harder for small firms, pushing up the cost of credit while leaving households with less money to spend.

Our Executive Director @craigie_b has been talking to London’s police chief about the scourge of crime against small businesses, and how few lead to investigations let alone convictions 👇
Appreciated the chance to speak with @metpoliceuk Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, today, at New Scotland Yard
While big stores & chains weapon up in the face of crime with brilliant tech solutions and security forces, this model doesn’t work for small retailers - and they quickly become the target of prolific shoplifters
FSB research shows that 59% of small firms who reported a crime say police didn’t attend; 48% say that there was no investigation - and only 3% say there was an arrest. (There is a financial cost to almost all of these offences - 56% say that is £1,000 or more.)
Frustrating to both business and the police, the courts normally then even let those 3% off - unless it’s a major repeat offender with an abundance of highest-quality evidence. Sir Mark very clear the ‘police won’t investigate crimes below £200’ claims are untrue.
While crime stats in London are improving, the above pattern is dangerous - as already 31% of small biz have not reported their most impactful crime in previous year (as they feel there’s little point). Crime must not become just another ‘cost of doing business’, nor a disincentive to setting up as a small business.
Activity to help will follow on easier reporting, better neighbourhood policing, co-ordination with BIDs, and facial recognition. @fsb_policy @FSBGtrLondon

The Government wants to achieve growth in every postcode, but the Chancellor's #Budget2026 missed the mark on matching that ambition, FSB's @craigie_b tells @AliFortescue on @SkyNews ⤵️
Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) retweeted
Off we go!
At @SkyNews @cathynewman @AliFortescue; on before 8pm, responding on #Budget26 for @fsb_policy
This #Budget2026 should have been the moment to help small businesses with the soaring costs holding them back, and the taxes restricting job creation.
Instead, they got nothing to ease sky-high energy bills and nothing to make hiring someone more affordable, while the increase in business rates relief excludes too many.

⏰ If you're a small business owner, you know that the true impact of late payments goes well beyond the £11 billion it costs small firms each year - harming cashflow, growth, and the economy as a whole.
✅ But the Commercial Payments Bill, which FSB campaigned for, is huge step towards stamping out late payments for good. Small Business Minister @SonnyLeong53 and @deirdrecostigan told us what the Bill will mean for small firms.
💼 Ahead of tomorrow's #Budget2026, FSB's David Hale tells @carolewalkercw on @TimesRadio how the Chancellor can back small businesses and help to encourage growth across the whole of the UK 🎙️
This document will be a game-changer for any small business which has experienced late payments at the hands of a big business.
⏰ It's the Commercial Payments Bill, aimed at outlawing these poor payment practices. It's been voted for by the @UKHouseofLords, and it's now going to MPs for their approval.
✅ To mark this halfway point in the law-making process, the Bill was presented at our Westminster office by Small Business Minister Lord Leong - who steered the legislation through the House of Lords - and Labour MP Deirdre Costigan, who will be one of the Bill's champions in the @HouseofCommons.
This is the time to win back the trust of small business owners and end the anti-entrepreneur era, FSB’s @craigie_b tells @SkyNews ahead of Wednesday’s #Budget2026.
