Today at @USUN alongside USAmbUN, Freedom House's CEO @jamiemfly was honored to have the opportunity to highlight the decades of repression in Cuba. The world must not overlook the regime's denial of fundamental freedoms. Cubans deserve a voice in their country's future.
Following today's Cuba Libre panel at the UN, @USAmbUN joined @FreedomHouse CEO @JamieFly at the Foreign Press Center to brief international media on U.S. priorities regarding Cuba and human rights at the UN.
Freedom House was glad to join @USAmbUN today to highlight the Cuban regime’s decades of repression. According to @PrisonersDFNdrs, more than 1,350 political prisoners remain behind bars in Cuba. We commend @USUN for convening former political prisoners, including Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and José Daniel Ferrer, whose firsthand accounts are a powerful counter to the regime’s propaganda.
We will continue to amplify their voices and stand with the Cuban people in their pursuit of freedom and dignity. #FreeThemAll
Panelists including former political prisoners Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and José Daniel Ferrer, and experts from @ArchivoCuba joined @USAmbUN today at the UN to shed light on the reality of living under Cuban regime repression.

Heartbreaking and horrifying. Another Rwandan dissident, Robert Kabera, was found beheaded in Uganda.
@RamsNFL why accept “Visit Rwanda” sponsorship from a regime with a documented record of killings and transnational repression?

In Vilnius last week, Freedom House CEO @jamiemfly, members of the Freedom House Board, and staff met with @DMatulionis, Chief National Security Adviser to Lithuanian President @GitanasNauseda.
The meeting underscored the importance of strong transatlantic cooperation and Lithuania's leadership in defending democracy and countering authoritarian threats.
In Vilnius, Freedom House CEO @jamiemfly met with Belarusian civil society expert Tatiana Kouzina, who was released from a Belarusian prison last month after more than five years as a political prisoner.
Freedom House was proud to work with Tatiana prior to her detention and we are thrilled to see another individual highlighted through our Fred Hiatt Program to Free Political Prisoners released. We will continue to stand with those still unjustly imprisoned in Belarus. #FreeThemAll
Freedom House CEO @jamiemfly met with Estonia’s Undersecretary for Global Affairs @MinnaLiinaLind in Vilnius last week.
As authoritarian threats grow, strong partnerships are essential to defending democracy and supporting those fighting for freedom worldwide. Thank you to #Estonia (@MFAestonia) for its continued leadership in advancing democracy and human rights around the world.

We are deeply concerned by reports of a potential case of transnational repression in Uganda. Former Rwandan soldier Robert Kabera, who in recent years became a critic of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, was found beheaded in a village outside of Kampala. The asylum seeker is the latest Rwandan dissident to be found murdered beyond the country’s borders.
We call on Ugandan authorities to promptly and thoroughly investigate the incident and provide greater protection to other exiled individuals facing threats.

Internet freedom isn't just about technology. It's about people's ability to connect, express themselves, and participate in democratic life.
This summer, as part of our ongoing partnership, students from @RutgersU Democracy Lab assisted with research for #FreedomOnTheNet 2026, examining the policies and practices shaping digital rights worldwide.
Ahead of this year’s report launch this week, hear what they learned and why they believe free expression, privacy, and government transparency matter for democracy.
“Democratic solidarity must be measured not only in words, but through concrete and sustained action”
At a time when authoritarian regimes are increasingly coordinating across borders, sharing repressive tactics, technologies, propaganda tactics, and political support, democracies must respond with equal unity and determination.
Freedom House was proud to partner with @LithuaniaMFA last week to host the Vilnius Freedom Summit, reaffirming our shared commitment to supporting those on the front lines of freedom and democracy worldwide. Read more: freedomhouse.org/article/vil…
Freedom House condemns the firebombing of the home and office of Dhundup Gyalpo, the Dalai Lama's representative in South Africa, in Centurion on October 14. This was the second attack on the property this year. No one should be targeted or intimidated because of their religious beliefs or cultural identity. Tibetan communities living abroad have the right to live safely and practice their faith without fear. Those responsible for these attacks must be held accountable.
As Freedom House celebrates 85 years, we're reflecting on how our work has evolved to meet new challenges to freedom, including those emerging online.
When we launched #FreedomOnTheNet in 2009, our research covered just 15 countries. Today, we examine how emerging technologies, censorship, and digital repression affect human rights around the world.
This week, we'll release the newest edition of #FreedomOnTheNet, continuing our commitment to defending freedom in the digital age.

As we mark Freedom House's 85th anniversary this month, join us in looking back at the progress made in the fight for freedom and the challenges that remain.
In 2026, #FreedomInTheWorld recorded the 20th consecutive year of global freedom in decline.
However, most democracies remain resilient in the face of daunting challenges. Of the 87 countries rated Free in 2005, a total of 76—more than 85 percent—have remained Free throughout the two-decade period of global decline. New democracies have taken root under difficult circumstances, and aspirations for democracy routinely find popular support in even the most repressive environments.

Freedom House welcomes @ChinaSelect Chairman @RepMoolenaar's sponsorship of Joshua Wong through @TLHumanRights' Defending Freedoms Project.
Joshua, whose case Freedom House has also adopted, has been imprisoned in Hong Kong since 2020 for his pro-democracy activism.
We thank @ChinaSelect for highlighting his case and join the call for his immediate and unconditional release. #FreeThemAll
“Today, Chairman John Moolenaar of the Select Committee on China honored Joshua Wong and sponsored him for the Defending Freedoms Project at the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in Congress. Wong has been imprisoned by the Chinese Communist Party for his pro-democracy activism in Hong Kong continuously since 2020.
‘Joshua Wong's courage and fortitude in speaking out against the CCP and its destruction of Hong Kong’s democracy is inspiring to all who work to promote freedom and liberty. We must do all we can to speak out for Joshua and work to secure his release from the CCP’s prisons’ said Moolenaar. ‘His case is also a reminder for all Americans that our values separate us from the CCP. Joshua is fighting for the universal truth that all people are endowed by our Creator to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is a foundational value of our country, and it is why the CCP has put Joshua in jail. He should be released immediately and allowed to reunite with his family.’”

Cuba has 1,350+ political prisoners today, more than 140 more than in January despite repeated regime announcements of prisoner releases early this year.
Repression is rising, not receding. Freedom House calls for the immediate release of all political prisoners. #FreeThemAll
