FieldAI CEO and Co-Founder Ali Agha spoke at @TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 on “Operating at the Edge: How AI Works When the Cloud Doesn’t,” sharing practical lessons from deploying autonomous robots in unstructured environments.
Field Foundation Models run onboard the robot, making decisions in real time, entirely at the edge. No GPS. No prior maps. No predefined routes. No internet connection required. Robots assess their surroundings, account for risk, and adapt as conditions change. On active construction sites, inside industrial facilities, and other complex job sites, robots can inspect, collect critical site data, and perform a range of tasks while work continues around them.
Thank you to TechCrunch and everyone who joined the conversation.

FieldAI robots navigate active construction sites while crews keep building.
Workers on ladders, equipment in the path, and conditions that change throughout the day. Operating in these environments requires robots that can reason about their surroundings and adapt as work progresses.
For general contractors, developers, and owners, that means a reliable, affordable way to capture site conditions more frequently and consistently. FieldAI robots support progress tracking, verification against plans, and earlier identification of potential issues, giving teams up-to-date visibility to make informed decisions and keep projects on track.
FieldAI has been recognized by @FastCompany as one of the Next Big Things in Tech for 2026.
This recognition is a testament to the incredible work of our team in pushing the boundaries of robotic intelligence and putting general-purpose robots to work across construction sites, energy facilities, manufacturing plants, and other complex, real-world environments.

“Learning the model is really only a tiny part of an overall robotic system. It’s an important part, but not the only part, and not the part that really makes the system work.”
Dr. Sebastian Scherer, also known as “Basti,” is Director of Safe Embodied AI at FieldAI. He has worked at the frontier of autonomous systems since the first Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (@DARPA) Grand Challenge in 2004 and leads the AirLab at @CarnegieMellon University's Robotics Institute.
At FieldAI, Basti is part of a multidisciplinary team bringing together decades of field robotics experience and frontier AI research to build physical AI through an architecture-first approach.
Field Foundation Models combine data-driven AI with physics-based reasoning and uncertainty awareness, enabling robots to reason about what they don’t know, actively gather more information when needed, and operate reliably in unpredictable environments.

FieldAI is proud to be collaborating with HTX (Home Team Science & Technology Agency) at the newly launched Home Team Humanoid Robotics Centre (H2RC) in Singapore, a dedicated facility focused on developing and training humanoid robots for public safety.
H2RC brings together the Home Team, industry, universities, and research institutes to advance robotics for real operational environments. The Centre is exploring applications where robots can take on physically demanding and dangerous work, including hazardous materials response and post-blast investigations.
FieldAI is excited to contribute as one of H2RC’s industry collaborators as HTX advances physical AI for the future of public safety.

At @ieeeiros 2026, FieldAI’s Dr. Sebastian Scherer (@smash0190) presented “Resilience in the Field,” exploring what it takes to build robots that reliably operate outside controlled environments.
"Basti" has worked in field robotics since the first @DARPA Grand Challenge in 2004 and today leads the AirLab at @CarnegieMellon University’s Robotics Institute alongside his role as Director of Safe Embodied AI at FieldAI.
His message: resilience has to be designed across the entire system.
Robots operating in the field need to reason through uncertainty, gather more information when needed, recover when conditions change, and continue making safe decisions over long missions.

Research meets the field at @ieeeiros 2026.
FieldAI is in Pittsburgh this week presenting new research and sharing what we’ve learned deploying robots across hundreds of sites on three continents.
Founder & CEO Ali Agha also joined a panel on what it takes to turn breakthrough robotics research into deployment at scale.
Find us at Booth 234 through October 1.
It was an honor to welcome H.E. @Dalyahya, Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization, to FieldAI.
We appreciated the opportunity to share our work in physical AI and exchange perspectives on the opportunities ahead in Saudi Arabia and the broader region.
Thank you, Your Excellency, for the thoughtful visit and conversation. We look forward to continuing the dialogue and working toward a more connected and inclusive digital future.
AI is entering a whole new Field, quite literally.
Very pleased to reconnect with Ali Agha, Founder and CEO of @fieldai_, who took me on a fascinating tour to experience their robots up close.
In simple terms, FieldAI’s technology is the brain behind the robots, helping machines understand, adapt, and operate in the physical world.
Seeing it firsthand made me feel like that 12-year-old who became fascinated with technology after one glimpse of a Mac computer.
That curiosity has never left me, and neither has my belief that with imagination and determination, almost any idea can become possible.
Excited to see where innovators like Ali take #AI next.

Big news and another major step in scaling physical AI and the future of heavy industry: today, FieldAI is announcing its strategic collaboration with @Caterpillarinc, backed by a major commercial agreement.
FieldAI is bringing its general-purpose robots together with Caterpillar’s industry expertise and operational data to accelerate the deployment of physical AI, autonomy, and robotics across industrial operations.
Caterpillar selected FieldAI following extensive real-world validation of FieldAI’s ability to deploy robots across Caterpillar’s complex, dynamic jobsites. FieldAI’s general-purpose, robot-agnostic Field Foundation Models™ (FFM) are built for exactly these conditions, enabling robots to turn real-time observations from jobsites and industrial environments into actionable intelligence that can improve safety, productivity, and operational efficiency at scale.
Caterpillar has spent more than a century shaping how work gets done across jobsites and manufacturing environments. With a growing global footprint of FieldAI deployments across three continents, this collaboration creates an exciting opportunity to bring robots and AI-enabled machines to industrial operations at significantly greater scale and help shape the next century of heavy industry.
This collaboration is part of a broader expansion of FieldAI’s commercial deployments across industries, with more to come soon.

A FieldAI-powered robot, pictured with Singapore's Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow at @SMRT_Singapore's Gali Batu Bus Depot.
It patrols autonomously with infrared sensing, checking buses and EV charging bays for abnormal heat so the safety team gets an early warning instead of an incident.
Congratulations to SMRT on the launch of their new Mobility Command and Control Centre.

The value in physical comes from being able to deploy it across different bodies and environments.
It's making models so good, that edge cases become second nature.
@fieldai_ handed a full passenger vehicle to a customer, gave it a waypoint dozens of miles out in the vehicle's own coordinates, then removed its maps and its GPS. Every decision the vehicle made came from FIeld's Foundation Models.

More mobility creates a harder autonomy problem.
More environments. More edge cases. More unpredictability.
That's why we're expanding our ongoing collaboration with @fieldai_ as r-dog moves toward production.
Field Foundation Models will serve as its autonomy brain.
Shayegan Omidshafiei, FieldAI President and Chief Scientist, gave the keynote “Autonomy in the Wild” at @autonomousevent The Future of Robotics & Physical AI in San Francisco.
The premise: what does it take for a robot to arrive at a site it has never seen, with no prior map, no GPS, and no site-specific training—and get to work?
FieldAI robots do exactly that across hundreds of deployments in construction, energy, and other complex industrial environments, where conditions are constantly changing and robots must operate safely around people, equipment, and incomplete information.

@fieldai_ has developed its own model architectures in-house, labelled Field Foundation Models (FFMs).
Designed, like many models, for better physical generalisation but also better at reducing the level of hallucination seen across other chosen architectures.
It's the models they use to make robots better equipped for a variety of terrains.
