FNW Series: THE EXPLOSIVE EDGE 🏈💥
Here’s a number every football coach should know:
Win the +20-yard play battle → Win 81% of the time.
We all game-plan to win the turnover battle.
But are you actually game-planning to win the explosive-play battle?
This week I break down 4 ways to intentionally build +20 opportunities into your Friday night call sheet.
Don’t hope for explosives Friday. Game plan them Sunday.

OVR and FNW CLIENT w/ HISTORIC WIN LAST NIGHT.
Congratulations to @CoachBenMc19 and @LCU_ftball!
Last night LCU defeated @ncaa Division I Northwestern State 42–37, becoming the first @naia program in history to defeat a scholarship-awarding Division I program.
Down 27–14 at halftime, the Wildcats didn't flinch. They outscored Northwestern State 28–10 in the second half to make history.
I'm incredibly proud to have LCU as both a @fastnwide and OVR program. To see a program we’ve had the opportunity to work with make college football history is pretty special.
FNW and OVR doesn’t win football games—players and coaches do. But I’m proud that both were built to help coaches develop their players, strengthen their culture, and ultimately build better football programs.
Congratulations to Coach McLaughlin, his staff and the entire LCU program. What a night. What a win. What an accomplishment.

FAST N WIDE TEMPO TIP 🏈💨
Get an extra camera and KEEP IT RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY so you can track your actual speed between snaps.
Then challenge your offense:
Snap it before the chain crew is set.
Snap it before the umpire is set.
Snap it before all 11 defenders are set.
Don’t guess whether you’re playing fast. Film it. Time it. Track it.

Today’s notes from the 3-Ring Binder come from the great John Parchman, three-time state champion at Midland Lee, speaking at the Angelo Clinic in 2001.
There is lots of GOLD that can be discussed at the next coaches meeting:
- Love on those seventh-grade C-teamers—you never know what they might become if they stay in the program. His example was a kid who made his first EVER start in the state championship!
- Five-yard penalties are often the sign of a poorly coached team.
- And my favorite: No highway department drills—one working while 10 stand around watching.

“What are coaches missing when they’re only tracking strength and speed?”
They’re missing the edge.
Because strength and speed?
That’s only half the athlete.
The other half—the part that actually separates teams—is:
- Competitor
- Teammate
- Student
- Citizen
That’s not extra.
That’s the difference.
Right now, most programs talk about those things.
The best programs?
They measure it. Track it. Reward it.
That’s where behavior changes.
That’s where culture shows up.
That’s where teams separate.

Coaches—
I’m building a new app, Arena OVR, that lets you track and rate your athletes daily.
50% measurables.
50% intangibles.
Effort. Attitude. Discipline.
If a player earns +3 or more…
they wake up to this.
No reminders. No chasing.
Just daily accountability.

Coach—Do you check Yelp ratings or customer reviews before trying a new restaurant?
Of course you do. Because ratings give you a quick, clear picture of what to expect.
So let me ask you this—What rating do your players have?
Not just stats…
- Effort.
- Attendance.
- Accountability.
- Being a great teammate.
Most teams don’t track it. That’s why I built Arena OVR.
Every player gets a 0–99 rating built on:
- 50% measurables
- 50% intangibles
Because if ratings drive decisions everywhere else…
why not in your program?

This made me smile so I had to share…
I’m doing a Follow Me customization for a 6-man program in West Texas — the Happy Cowboys. One of the pictures hc @coach_perryman sent included this sign that said:
“You Ain’t No Cowboy.”
So I texted him: “Coach… I’ve gotta know the story behind this sign.”
His response was gold:
“Haha that’s our discipline dice poster. If a player gets detention or any other infraction, he rolls two dice. We always have a freshman that asks how you get ‘free ice cream.’ But the real part is the accountability piece… if you mess up, the rest of the guys get to tell you all day — ‘you ain’t no cowboy.’”
Coaches could all make more money selling copiers…but getting to build a culture like this is way more fun.

I texted a coach this morning and asked how the new job was going after about a month.
His response was one I’ve heard many times… and lived myself:
“Not bad. Some kids pushing back culture wise. Always worried about staff and numbers.”
If you go into a program and start making the changes that need to be made, be ready for pushback.
That’s normal.
My advice to him:
Water the good grass.
Don’t let the weeds hold you hostage.
Too many coaches start looking the other way because they want to keep players and coaches happy.
They convince themselves they can slowly change the culture.
It doesn’t work that way. Culture doesn’t drift in the right direction. It moves toward the standard you enforce.
Stay strong to your principles.
The right grass will grow. 🌱🏈

🎙️ New 4th & 3 Episode: From “Your Players” to “Our Players”
I remember getting an email from a teacher asking me to come by her classroom.
When I got there, she said:
“Coach… your players need to do better in class.”
And that’s when it hit me…
If the building sees them as your players instead of our players, you have a problem.
Because culture doesn’t just live in the locker room — it lives in the hallways, classrooms, and relationships across campus.
In this episode, we break down how great programs intentionally build connections with faculty, staff, and students so the entire school feels ownership of the team.
Coach Cary and Coach McLaughlin share so many practical ideas, you’ll probably fill three pages of notes.
This conversation is especially valuable if you:
✅ Are taking over a program
✅ Want stronger staff and administrative support
✅ Are trying to change culture
✅ Want your players respected across campus
You’ll walk away with strategies you can implement immediately.
If you want to win more than just games… this one matters.

Just got this text from Head Coach @JasonFreed96 after today’s Leadership Academy with @brainerdfootbal
“This was a great lesson today with the troops. They were very honest with their answers. I think it was an eye-opener for them to hear their teammates say the things they said.”
Fired up. This is how leadership actually grows.
