New preclinical research suggests that focused ultrasound may have implications for Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions involving myelin and white matter, though further research is needed.
Researchers at @Sunnybrook and @UofT found that focused ultrasound–mediated blood-brain barrier modulation increased the production of oligodendrocytes, the cells responsible for producing myelin, in two regions of the brain.

The Lockhart Family: Creating a Legacy of Hope
A decade after losing their son Andrew to a rare bile duct cancer, Terry and Gene Lockhart continue to honor his memory by supporting focused ultrasound research and advancing new treatment options for patients with cancer.
Since 2016, Andrew’s family and friends have donated nearly $1 million to the Foundation in his memory, establishing the Andrew J. Lockhart Memorial Prize and later funding a postdoctoral fellowship to invest in the next generation of focused ultrasound researchers.
In a meaningful full-circle moment, histotripsy—a focused ultrasound technology co-invented by a former Lockhart Prize recipient—is now being studied in combination with immunotherapy to treat a form of the same cancer that claimed Andrew’s life.
We are deeply grateful to the Lockhart family for turning personal loss into a lasting legacy of hope for patients and families facing cancer. Read their story: fusfoundation.org/posts/the-…

Then & Now: 20 Years of Focused Ultrasound Progress
When the Foundation was established in 2006, there were very few focused ultrasound clinical trials worldwide.
Twenty years later, more than 440 clinical trials are active across the globe, demonstrating the remarkable growth of the field and the breadth of applications now being investigated.
This progress reflects decades of scientific discovery, technological innovation, and growing interest in focused ultrasound. With nearly 200 medical indications now in various stages of research and clinical adoption, investigators worldwide are continuing to explore new ways the technology could benefit patients.
Follow #FUSF20 as we celebrate 20 years of milestones that have shaped focused ultrasound.

Meeting enrollment goals remains a significant challenge in clinical research. In this month’s blog, we highlight how the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre’s McKeown Laboratory launched, enrolled, completed, and published a Foundation-funded focused ultrasound neuromodulation study in less than two years.
Their approach includes building a database of potential participants, reviewing cases during weekly interdisciplinary meetings, identifying eligible candidates through medical records, and working with patient organizations to connect people with research opportunities.
