EXCLUSIVE - RAF Fairford plot was foiled when one of the suspects phoned police himself. “A farmer driving home in the early hours of Sunday morning saw the vans, surrounded by men in balaclavas, and alerted police at 1.36am. However, The Times understands the authorities were already on the scene by then because the suspect had called nearly one hour earlier.” Did he get cold feet or was it part of the plan? It accounts for the discrepancy between a farmer’s report and the police account Police investigation is focused on alleged Iran proxies and suspect’s motives in calling 999 are also under investigation. thetimes.com/article/72536db…

Few new details in this update from CT policing . No information on whether they are searching properties or other information about the attack. Crucially, no update on the contradiction between Donald Trump's claims that the suspects were being watched, and the police statement that they reacted last minute to a 999 call

Today’s front page. Notts families were kept in dark over this. There is only one mind boggling reason they even found out The mentally ill man, stalking parents of children killed by a paranoid schizophrenic, complained HIMSELF, from a hospital where he was sectioned , that the police watchdog had not investigated his imagined claims of coverup.

EXCLUSIVE - more disturbing revelations in Nottingham killings of Grace O'Malley-Kumar, Barney Webber and Ian Coates. Nottinghamshire police failed to warn bereaved families that a mentally ill stalker, with a history of threats and police contact, was attempting to locate them. Barney's parents are "staggered" that they were not told for 18 months the man had travelled to Somerset to try and find them. He also attended Grace's father @drsanjoykumar GP surgery wanting to talk about his imagined claims of a coverup in the case. Families left distressed after learning this man was sectioned, only to abscond from hospital - yet even then there were delays in telling them. And police claimed he only wanted to "offer help" and his nurses did not believe he was a threat [not much reassurance to families whose loved ones were killed by Calocane who was sectioned four times]. Police are now facing serious questions about why they did not tell them this man had been referred to Prevent, the violent extremism scheme. They still do not know why. Astonishingly this has only come to light because the stalker, still thought to be sectioned, has made a complaint that the police watchdog hasn't properly investigated his coverup claims. Emma Webber: “It is yet again a systemic lack of transparency, inadequate risk assessment and a severe breach of duty. We have been denied the right to protect ourselves.” She says it is "profoundly upsetting" she and family weren't given warning, particularly as this man travelled to the town where her son Charlie was at school. Sanjoy Kumar notes the contrast that the family of his daughter's killer were offered protection and CCTV by police over concerns about reprisals after attacks in June 2023. “We as victims do not even get a fair warning at the time that this man was missing from being sectioned and trying to find us. This is how the country treats victims, we are second-class citizens.” Full story: thetimes.com/uk/crime/articl… @MrsEmmaWebber

“Sarah” on finding out her rapist will be released early from prison under Labour’s sentencing reforms. “It’s one of the worst crimes you can commit, other than murder. How can Keir Starmer say that he’s trying to protect young children through a social media ban, when he’s letting child rapists out early?” Sarah had wrongly assumed the sentencing cuts, to ease prison overcrowding, would not apply to sex offenders. Grooming gang victims have also been told sentences will be cut - but Labour wont give info on total rapists being released, and how early. Sarah says “it’s such an insult. His release date of 2030 was set by a judge, in front of a court of law, where he had been found guilty. He groomed me, raped me and sexually assaulted me. And he gets two years off his sentence. That’s an insult to me and it’s just a constant kick in the teeth for victims.” Criminals including rapists who had to serve two-thirds of term can now be released at halfway point. Thousands of others will be released with electronic tagging after one-third of jail term. The MOJ says the overhaul is needed to fix the prisons crisis and it will “always lock up dangerous criminals”

EXCLUSIVE on grooming gangs Baroness Louise Casey, warns that, a year after her devastating review, child rape victims still have criminal convictions linked to their ordeals that have not been quashed. Police still don't have mandatory access to children's services records, which leaves victims at risk. Whitehall officials engage in "box ticking" but don't tackle the full issue. "Recommendations are accepted in full, action is promised. And then, slowly, it all goes quiet." Casey draws parallels to other scandals where civil servants have a "tendency to do just enough to demonstrate action without truly gripping and fixing the problem". thetimes.com/uk/crime/articl…

“You could end up killing someone" That was the warning in July 2020 from one of Valdo Calocane's pyschiatrists. But instead of livesaving interventions the next three years - before he killed Barney, Grace and Ian - were marked by failings. Calocane broke a woman's back, but medics wrote it up as "minor injuries". He was repeatedly hospitalised for violence because he didn't take meds, but he wasn't sectioned for longer nor his treatment changed. When he assaulted a police officer and had to be subdued with Taser and cuffs - a psychiatrist wrote he was "a normally a gentle, law-abiding young man”. He brought a hammer to a psych ward and it was returned to him when he left.  It's been more than two years since NHS England wanted to suppress its report into the #Nottinghamkillings failings. They only published it because The Times outed their plans on the front page. But the public inquiry into Calocane has really lifted the lid on just how badly it all went wrong. My report on three years of missed chances. thetimes.com/uk/crime/articl…

It is only because of the campaigning work and extraordinary perseverance of @drsanjoykumar @MrsEmmaWebber and other bereaved family members that we have got any sense of the true scale of failings in this case. They shouldn’t have had to fight this hard for the truth
