“We started talking about the perpetually private company back in 2014 or 2015.” Years before OpenAI, SpaceX, Anthropic, and continuation vehicles became mainstream, @errikanderson was already thinking through why the best companies may stay private far longer than previous generations. @errikanderson and I discuss: • permanent capital • continuation vehicles • founder control • secondary liquidity • why compounding businesses often resist public markets One of the more thoughtful frameworks I’ve heard on the future of company building and capital formation. @errikanderson has founded four unicorns. And few know his name. That’s by design. Because he’s playing a different game. Most founders ask: 👉 “What company should I build?” Errik asks: 👉 “What problem space do I want to spend my life in?” His principle: Build the business you want to work in for the rest of your career. That leads to very different outcomes: • Longer time horizons • Deeper conviction • Less interest in exits Instead of chasing wins, he’s building a compounding machine in biotech. Not for attention. For impact. Errik’s ambition is simple (and insane): help solve cancer. Backed by people like @peterthiel and @JTLonsdale, he’s quietly helped develop more cancer therapeutics than ANY human in history. When I asked why he named his family office Ulysses, he said: “I wanted the most generic name possible—so my kids can build their own legacy.” That tells you everything you need to know about him. This episode builds on 16 years of philosophical conversations I’ve been lucky to have with Errik as a friend. Special shoutout to @ChristopherZook, @atlasventure, @benchmark and @BillAckman mentioned in the episode! We’d like to thank @AlphaSenseInc for sponsoring this episode! #Biotech #VentureCapital #PrivateMarkets #DrugDiscovery #Innovation #CapitalAllocation Full episode👇 youtube.com/watch?v=CPNSTMA8…

Alloy Therapeutics just raised $40M in Series E funding at a $1B valuation, with 8VC, JIC Venture Growth Investments, and Echo Capital Group among the investors. What stands out is that Alloy is not selling AI as another thin discovery layer. It is building shared biotech infrastructure that combines AI/ML, real-world data, and wet-lab execution so virtual biotechs and lean pharma teams can run discovery, preclinical work, and development without owning the full stack themselves. That model looks more consequential than another biotech AI software pitch. Alloy says it now supports more than 200 partners, more than 100 licensed therapeutic programs, and 22 clinical-stage assets. If that operating layer keeps compounding, biotech may start to look less like a collection of standalone drug companies and more like a market built on shared development infrastructure. Quick facts👇 ● founders: Errik Anderson ● total capital raised: ≈$174M ● HQ: Waltham, Massachusetts ● Investors: 8VC; JIC Venture Growth Investments; Echo Capital Group; Mubadala Capital; Presight Capital; Thiel Capital; Founders Fund; Alexandria Venture Investments; Gaingels; Ulysses Diversified Holdings

Alloy Therapeutics Founder & CEO @errikanderson believes we will cure every disease that is curable in the next three decades. "We are living in a world where we will cure everything that is curable in the next three decades, maybe even faster than that." "It's really just a question of how fast can we accelerate and give as many people as possible access to these incredible tools." "[During the dot-com boom], there were a lot of the same criticisms that we're hearing in the tech space right now as it relates to biotech. We did see the flow of investment coming in, and many things went bankrupt." "But the things that didn't go bankrupt changed the world, and that exact same thing is happening today and you're going to see an incredible number of winners. The tech space is going to go conquer biology as much as it has in other places."

Our civilization could improve and even save the lives of a LOT more kids with rare diseases, based on recent scientific breakthroughs. It’s our job as leaders to harness innovation and policy to push ahead more cures. Will share more on this one as we go; just getting started.
Rare diseases are devastating, underfunded, and not so rare (affecting ~300 million worldwide). @MendraInc, from 8VC Build, uses AI to bypass clinical/commercial barriers and advance the most promising therapies to global availability. We’re proud to co-lead their $82M Series A.

This is an important rejoinder to the Politico hit piece and a reminder that, its critics notwithstanding, @uaustinorg is doing something profound, which is to provide a new blueprint for American higher education. One that aspires to a genuine sharing of ideas and arguments, excellence, meritocracy -- all that. Inevitably, there will be failures and disappointments. In which universe does anything get built without that? But none of these disappointments is anything but that -- a temporary hurdle. We are in the midst of massive institutional churn. Those inside the old institutions -- the dinosaurs -- are smirking, grumbling or, most likely, oblivious to what is happening all around them. They don't see it, one suspects, because demand for what they're peddling has yet to decline. That's only because of a dearth of alternatives -- of which UATX is one of a handful. In the not too distant future, one suspects, UATX will be viewed not as an outlier, but a leading indicator. Other new schools will offer competing visions and curricula. but the underlying mission will be the same: to reimagine the Great American University.
Well. That Politico article bugged me all weekend. I haven't seen any other parents post, so I took a shot. Nate approved. xitter.cf/BrianFreed/status/2013… @uaustinorg @shellenberger @JTLonsdale @plodinec @RealBenCrocker
