A great reminder that sometimes, connection can be found in the pages of a book—and in the people we share them with.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s an important connection worth talking about.
A 2025 study of 75,951 women from the PLCO Cancer Screening Trial found that women with a previous breast cancer diagnosis had a higher incidence of subsequent primary lung cancer compared with women without a breast cancer diagnosis.
Read the study: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4037…
Cancer survivorship doesn’t always mean the cancer journey is over. Continued awareness, follow-up care, and conversations about your individual health risks matter.
If you’ve experienced both breast cancer and lung cancer, you are not alone.
Your story belongs in this community.

New research deepens our understanding of inherited #lungcancer risk. Researchers analyzed genetic data from 3.3M+ people to better understand germline #EGFR T790M, a rare inherited mutation.
Key points:
👉 Germline ≠ somatic. Finding T790M in a tumor does not mean it was inherited
👉 Carriers had 25× higher odds of lung cancer, but the mutation is rare—about 1 in 15,000 people
👉 It explains some familial lung cancer, but not all. I’m not a carrier despite 3 generations of lung cancer in my family
The research gets us closer to the questions that matter: Who should be screened? When should screening start? How often? And ultimately, how do we find lung cancer earlier, when it’s most treatable?
Help spread the word about our Lung Cancer Genetics Study. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against lung cancer 23andme.org/lung-cancer/
Huge thanks to the Susan Wojcicki Foundation, @23andMe, and everyone involved.

Today at #ITSOS2026, Alex Potter (@alexandra_p_24) presented the first results of the INSPIRE study!! Among 518 Black women, the lung cancer detection rate was 1.2%. Among women who smoked for >20 years but were ineligible under USPSTF criteria, it was 1.6%—compared with 1.0% in NLST. These findings support evaluating smoking duration in screening eligibility (#PotterCriteria).
This has been a years-long effort, and we’re not done yet. We are now screening Black men and women at risk for lung cancer, with a goal of reaching more than 2,000 people. We look forward to sharing that update by 2029!!

Cancer death rates have fallen for over 20 years straight, and progress in lung cancer is a large reason for that change -- according to a recent report issued by the CDC, NCI, ACS, and NAACCR.
Lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer death in the country. But we've been making steady improvements: fewer people have tobacco exposure, we have better screening options, and there are more treatment options available.
We know progress like this doesn't happen from any one thing. It takes research funding, early detection technologies, policy improvements, patient advocacy and more -- all working together to build momentum and lasting change.

Research is helping change what a lung cancer diagnosis means.
Every breakthrough brings us closer to better treatments, earlier detection, improved quality of life, and more hope for people living with lung cancer.
Lung cancer research helps scientists and doctors better understand the disease, develop personalized treatment options, and discover new ways to support patients and their families.
But research doesn’t happen without support.
By participating in clinical trials, sharing your story, advocating for increased research funding, and staying informed, you can help move lung cancer research forward.
Progress matters. Hope matters. Research matters.

There has been much progress made in lung cancer research in the last 5 years but more action is needed to give every person diagnosed with lung cancer the ability to live long, fulfilling lives.

🫁 The power of lung cancer advocacy is alive at UCLA, as reported by the @dailybruin. Once this bill is signed, California will become the 1st state in the nation to require disclosure about lung cancer screening wherever cigarettes are sold. This is an initiative aligned with the @AmLungCSI which is aiming to make this law across the country. The level of support received by state senator @SenBobArchuleta, and advocates like @hari_keshava and @JVelottaMD, was truly unparalleled. As well as the usual suspects in radiation oncology who joined the movement and testified along the bill's route to the Governor's desk. @arbmckee dailybruin.com/2026/09/22/st…

ALCSI’s Deepti Srinivasan (@DeeptiSrini) gave a terrific presentation at the World Conference on Lung Cancer (#WCLC26). She presented the first national estimate of lung cancer incidence among people who have never smoked in the United States, finding that nearly 30,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer each year.
Our team also found that 17% of women, 77% of U.S Asian women, and 58% of patients under the age of 40 had never smoked. This work highlights the urgent need to develop strategies for early detection in people who have never smoked.

Important findings from the MAVERICK study. Cognitive toxicity is not an abstract endpoint! Memory, concentration, independence, work, driving, child care and simply feeling like yourself significantly impacts #QOL.
But surveillance isn’t burden free for patients & families. It’s regular brain MRIs, living with scan-xiety, time off work, transportation, access to timely imaging AND treatment when needed. We don’t want MRI surveillance to become a recommendation only available for people who have the resources and ability.
