📕This summer the Edu Coach Network Book Club read and discussed The Advice Trap by Michael Bungay Stanier and we haven't stopped thinking about it since! Coaching should be a practice in staying curious longer. We rush to give advice because it feels like what we are supposed to do, but what happens when we challenge that notion? Here are 5 Tips adapted from Stanier's book to encourage curiosity in your coachin! 1. ✋Pause: Before jumping in to give advice or provide a solution- pause. Get comfortable in the silence. Allow you and the teacher to process what’s been brought to the table. Ask a follow-up question and then be generous with your silence. 2. 🔬Focus: Focus on the core issue by asking, “What’s the real challenge here for you?” Then, use tip 1 and PAUSE. As Stanier says, the first challenge is rarely the real challenge. Repeat this question to focus your coaching on the real issue. 3. 💪Empower: Create a space of psychological safety by building a sense of belonging and trust. Stanier uses the TERA Quotient as a guideline for this: Tribe: Be on their side. Expectation: Show them the future. Rank: Raise them up. Autonomy: Give them the choice. 4. 🤝Connect: Take coaching outside a formal one-to-one meeting. Stanier says, “Coaching is...an everyday way of showing up in any interaction.” In text, email, or in passing, choose to stay curious longer by using tips 1 and 2, then any moment becomes a coaching moment. 5. 🪞Reflect: Ask the teachers to reflect on their progress. This doesn’t happen without intentional practice. Provide an opportunity to make the learning stick by asking questions like: What worked? And what didn’t?
