🚨 New Report 🚨
After Katrina, New Orleans launched an unprecedented education experiment—rebuilding as a nearly all-charter system.
Controversial but transformative, it holds key lessons for today’s leaders.

It was 20 years ago today... Pleased to share this new report I coauthored w/ Tom Toch about the New Orleans education experience after Katrina.

School inspections? In the U.S.? Yes, indeed! Pleased to appear on the Education Gadfly Show to discuss what I learned from a reporting project for @EducationNext.
On the latest Education Gadfly Show podcast, @ewrobelen joins @MichaelPetrilli and David Griffith to discuss school inspections—what they are, how they might fit into accountability systems, and who’s actually using them in U.S. schools. fordhaminstitute.org/nationa…
Not a single U.S. city made this list. That's depressing. @TheEconomist

'So, what did you learn?' @MichaelPetrilli asks. The short answer. A lot. Pleased to wear my reporter hat and be a guest on the Education Gadfly show recently.
On this week’s Education Gadfly Show: Could school inspections be the accountability tool we’ve been missing? Former Ed Week reporter Erik Robelen joins @MichaelPetrilli and David Griffith to explain who’s using them—and why they might matter. fordhaminstitute.org/nationa…
School inspections are alive and well in the U.S., but get little notice. I shared what I learned reporting for @EducationNext on the @educationgadfly podcast. As a bonus, get the backstory of how @MichaelPetrilli met the love of his life.

School "inspections" are more widespread than you might guess in the U.S. A key inspiration was the English system. Turns out, that approach is seeing big changes, sparked in part by the tragic death of a principal. @MichaelPetrilli @EducationNext

Discuss!
Classroom observations have been disappearing, but nothing can judge good teaching better than seeing it in action.

@ewrobelen
Anyone remember the buzz around school "inspections" some years ago? Turns out, the idea is alive and well in the U.S., though the term "inspection" is rarely used here. I wore my edu-reporter hat for this piece. @EducationNext

**BREAKING** from @lrj417. NAEP was supposed to be off-limits. Now, it looks like DOGE has abruptly cancelled the next test, which was set to start in March. @The74 the74million.org/article/aft…

FAQ: Has funding for NAEP been cut?
A: No.
BUT, funding for two data-collection efforts, CCD and its private school equivalent, have been cut.
The NAEP relies on data from that work. A @GovBoard rep:
“Without that data, we can't currently identify representative samples and work with states to ensure the sampled schools are indeed representative.”
@jillbarshay’s reporting echoes what I have been hearing on this important question.
With the Kennedy Center in the news lately, here's a blog I wrote about some of the good they seek to do in the local area for kids. kennedy-center.org/our-story…
@kencen
So, it's Friday and maybe we could all use some, um, lighter news. I recently posted a pic here of my pets, something I rarely do. Turns out it made the @EdWriters newsletter. @EWA_Angelina @EWAEmily #petsofEWA

Attn folks who cover/follow issues regarding students w/ disabilities and their families.
I've heard now from two major disability advocates that the Dept. of Ed's Office For Civil Rights has canceled multiple mediation sessions in disability investigations and that canceling is *not* normal freep.com/story/news/educati…
I almost never post pet pics, but figured a dose of brotherly love might be appreciated. @Number10cat
