Speaking to Avril Hong from @BloombergTV today in the margins of the @IMFNews - @WorldBankGroup Bank Annual meetings, ESM Managing Director @pierregramegna highlighted the euro area’s robust crisis management and institutional framework.
Higher energy prices and rising interest rates are affecting economies worldwide. Today’s euro area is more resilient than it was during the global financial crisis. Spreads remain contained by comparison and the German Bund has strengthened its position as a stable reference point for investors. Budgetary buffers and fiscal space are essential to help countries absorb these shocks.
The ESM continues to monitor risks closely. With more than €430 billion in available lending capacity and a broad range of instruments, the ESM is well equipped.

On the margins of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, ESM Managing Director @pierregramegna participated in a @ForeignPolicy roundtable organised in partnership with Resilience Action Network International (@rani_action) and in collaboration with the Irish Presidency of the EU (@Ireland2026eu).
He stressed that financial stability is a global public good and highlighted how international institutions and Regional Financing Arrangements (RFAs) work together to safeguard it. He argued that Europe should be more confident in communicating its achievements, while boosting investment to increase competitiveness and economic growth. Looking ahead, he underlined the growing importance of strategic autonomy, particularly in finance and digital technologies, and stressed that central bank money should remain the anchor of trust in the digital age.
