The more I think about how agents should store context for a user, the more I think there needs to be something under Markdown that really allows for multi-player coordination. Something like Automerge / Pretext that the Markdown an agent sees is a projection of.

You know you’re in SF when you’re in a cafe overhearing people talk about moats and the various tech demigod heroes they have that they want to be like while a bus rolls covered in an orange “region: earth” wrap. Even with all of its issues, I still love this place.

Amazing how quickly we went from "oh no LLMs are going to flood the Internet with insecure code" to "oh no LLMs have discovered the internet was already flooded with insecure code"

Everyone says that they want security to be a priority in software, but in organizations, this means funding it in competition with other priorities, which usually isn’t easy in my experience. In any case, now’s the second best time to fund it.

This has always been true in software, but the rate of change passed a threshold that makes it a lot more noticeable (and uncomfortable) for a lot more people than before.

If you don’t enjoy learning new things, even things that contradict what you think is right: you’ve decided (consciously or unconsciously) to leave this industry One reason I have eg massive respect for @KentBeck who is my role model for lifelong learning and adapting

This.
The funny thing is everyone was saying AI slop code will cause a cyber crisis but it’s actually all the old human slop causing it and the AI is just cleaning it up

I’ve been wondering if the iPhone Duo was best thought of as a mini iPad that folded and happened to have a screen on the outside. All of the use cases I’m excited about are after the open.

Big Hugops to everyone I know in SRE or Security. Or, hell, anybody that’s responding to the day’s infosec earthquakes.

Foursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. teendrama.substack.com/p/som…

There’s gotta be a long German word for the hope that the non-Starlink-equipped plane that serves your flight tomorrow gets swapped out for one that is.

I wonder if the software in those demo Roadsters was only using the thrusters for attitude control, or was taking advantage of having two reaction wheels with powerful motors to help fine tune.

I like this touch in Claude Code Desktop. Along with all the other tweaks, it’s a solid update to the app experience that up levels the entire thing.

I dunno about you, but I’m super excited about a MacBook with a touch screen. I’ve been wanting one ever since I used Windows laptops with touchscreens years ago when I worked at Microsoft. And confirmed by using my iPad with a keyboard/trackpad combo.

The more time you put into iterating on and fine-tuning product-level questions at the beginning of a coding session, the better the end result is. Every time.

One of the things I obsessed over at my previous two jobs was to get as much out of the PR merge as possible and focusing on pre-merge, post-merge, and pre-deploy as the test points. Inertia didn’t let those efforts go too far, so it’s interesting to see Scion’s take on it.
New on our Engineering blog: Creating in-house source control. In May, we merged around 2,500 code changes per day. In September, we merged more than 30,000 per day. As a result, we became bottlenecked by developer infrastructure built for human (rather than agent) scale. Here, we share how we built a new version control system—and fully migrated our monorepo from git—in five months: anthropic.com/engineering/re…

Statement of the Holy Office on Signor Galilei’s Release of the Dialogo, Anno Domini 1632 Recently, in the city of Florence, Signor Galileo Galilei released a volume purporting to settle the most exalted questions concerning the arrangement of the heavens. He has previously been accused of passing off the Dutch spyglass as his own invention, and of disputing priority over the sunspots with the learned Father Scheiner. The faithful did not ask for this work to be done. In 1616 the Sacred Congregation, from whose wisdom Signor Galilei has claimed to derive his standing, warned through His Eminence Cardinal Bellarmine that the motion of the Earth should be neither held nor defended. By ignoring this central premise, Signor Galilei has shown total disregard for the norms of natural philosophy, norms that ensure knowledge of Creation remains trustworthy, piously pursued, and in service of the souls of men. The Church holds a particular vision of truth, informed by Scripture, by the Fathers, and by the long consensus of the learned since Aristotle and Ptolemy. We reject Signor Galilei’s assertion that his tube of glass advances our understanding, and we urge the faithful and the learned to regard his methods of publication with due suspicion. Printing a thousand copies at once, in the vulgar tongue rather than in Latin, so that any merchant or tradesman may read them, is not a demonstration of scholarship but a demonstration of power. We urge philosophers to cease their correspondence with Signor Galilei and to return to a vision of the cosmos that places Man, beloved of God and the summit of His Creation, at its center, where the Almighty in His wisdom set him. (This is parody of a statement released earlier this week, of course, just in case you didn’t catch it)

After we created this, Claude made this observation I thought was really good: The parallel goes deeper than tone. Bellarmine’s real position was more careful than “Galileo is wrong.” He wrote that if a true demonstration of the Earth’s motion were found, Scripture would need to be reinterpreted, but that until then it should be treated only as a hypothesis. That is close to the modern argument about proof versus persuasion: is a pile of unverified manuscripts a demonstration, or only a claim that has yet to earn trust? Galileo’s own strongest “proof,” his theory that the tides come from the Earth’s motion, turned out to be wrong. He was right about the conclusion even though his best argument for it failed.
