Comedy Central needed a rage-filled nerd for a sketch and I'm happy to say I am the rage-filled nerd they went with. A huge thanks to Tim Barnes (who wrote this gem) for bringing me onboard. Watch it here: youtube.com/watch?v=IVA0gb0m…
Visiting Paris last year made me appreciate adaptive reuse more than ever before. Particularly The Louvre and Musée d'Orsay. I can now better appreciate how Park Avenue Armory changed a military building into an arts center with theatre performances and art exhibitions.
Cabaret is my favorite movie musical, and I got to see it staged today for the 1st time. A particularly strong show to see on 4th of July weekend when you’re worried you might lose your health care coverage because the USA government chose to fund concentration camps. I loved it.
Last night at The @astoriabookshop Storytelling Show we heard about medically advocating for yourself, small town teaching, bad babysitting gig, a bruise, a tattoo, taking someone else’s meds, loud neighbors, backstabbed at work, protecting your kid from a racist. Next show 8/7.
Visiting the New York Sign Museum during their rare public hours is incredibly high on my NYC bucket list. Great to see them preserve the sign of Starlite Deli, which was open on 44th St between 7th and 8th Aves from 1984 to 2023. A longer run than Phantom had on the same block.
TOMORROW! 7pm! The July 2025 @astoriabookshop Storytelling Show! Free storytelling open mic! Show up, throw your name in the bucket, and perform a true, no theme, 5 minute story about something that happened to you! RSVP by emailing david at dtlawson dot com! See you at the show!
The view from the Gunpowder River Bridge, riding Amtrak through Northern Maryland, at 8:10pm last evening.
My niece Sophie turns 4 today. I was delighted to get to hang out with her so much this weekend. Among many other things she made sure to fill me in on the differences between the recently released Frozen West End stage proshot and the original movie.
In the crowd last night for the All it Takes is One Act Play Festival. Put on by A is For, who are artists working to advance reproductive rights and destigmatize abortion. I particularly appreciated the representation of the transgender experience in reproductive justice.
A WEEK FROM TONIGHT is the July 2025 @astoriabookshop Storytelling Show! RSVP email to david at dtlawson dot com if you want to show up, throw your name in the bucket, and perform a true, no theme, 5 minute story about something that happened to you! See you at the show!
Mr. Mamdani would you please be my mayor? I’m feeling a lot of hope this morning after last night’s victory in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary by my New York State Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani. Another world is possible.
Good morning on Election Day for the 2025 NYC Primary. Polls are open til 9pm. With ranked choice voting we may not have a winner for a few days. Then we likely have another competitive general ahead of us this November. Stay hydrated. Be kind to poll workers. Don’t rank Cuomo.
Over twenty years ago this piece of graphic design was a frequent sight at protests against the Iraq War. Thinking of it again today.
My fellow New Yorkers: Early voting continues today and through the weekend for the 2025 Primary. Election Day is Tuesday. There are five candidates for you to rank who I believe would be better than Eric Adams: Mamdani, Lander, Adrienne Adams, Myrie, Blake. DON’T RANK CUOMO.
The July 2025 @astoriabookshop Storytelling Show is two weeks from tonight. RSVP to david at dtlawson dot com if you want to show up, throw your name in the bucket, and perform a true, no theme, 5 minute story about something that happened to you. See you there.
