One of the hardest things about living with an invisible condition is being at the mercy of other people’s willingness to believe you

Did you know disabled kids are frequently left out of safety drills at school? They’re not part of survival planning. They’re left by the wayside. It’s not surprising when you consider a kid shot up a classroom full of disabled children and it’s barely a blip on the news.

Its National Disability Employment Awareness Month but no one in academia would know that bc unis do an EXCELLENT job at failing disabled scholars long before they can even try to become faculty

“People with chronic illness are so whiny.” Think about the last time you were really ill: unable to clean, do hobbies, work, etc. Just sore, symptomatic and miserable. Now imagine that… for life. How would your mental health be? Would you have trouble staying positive?

If you’re a scientist struggling with your mental health, you’re not alone. While I fear the stigma associated with mental illness will hurt my career, it’s my reality. And if you’re wondering if you can have those struggles and also have this career, you can & you’re not alone.

What happens when barriers unrelated to scientific ability determine who gets to do science? I wrote about accessibility, mentorship, and the experiments we may never know were possible @the_Node, The Experiments We Never Run. #DisabledInSTEM thenode.biologists.com/the-e…

If you’re disabled and relying on someone who’s abusive for literal survival, please know you’re not alone. The lack of social supports and safety nets mean many of us get trapped in exceedingly dangerous situations. Forced to choose between help with food and meds or abuse.

Disability Pride Month felt quieter this year. A few years ago, organizations regularly reached out to highlight disabled scientists and talk about accessibility in STEM. This year, many of those conversations seemed to disappear. But disabled scientists didn't disappear.

Accessibility barriers didn't disappear. Our work doesn't begin and end in July. Accessibility isn't seasonal. Neither is disability. #DisabeldInSTEM

I love when people ask what triggered the flare. Excellent question. The current suspects include weather, sleep, food, movement, stress, existing and possibly the moon.
