Aurora are being seen as far South as Corsica in the Mediterranean. GO LOOK UP IRL if weather allows (results may vary, check your local space weather forecasts, yada yada yada).

On 10th October 2024 we had the 2nd 'once in a lifetime' #AuroraBorealis display of the year. I photographed it from #Oxfordshire, UK and it was visible constantly from dusk until dawn, just as it had been on 10th May that year. It was so spectacular visually #NorthernLights

The Sun went FLARE!!!! And all those particles are headed this way. This means there is the potential to see both meteors and Northern Lights this weekend. If you have been thinking of camping, especially if you're in the northern latitudes, this is when you should go camping.

📍Gale Crater, Aug. 11, 2026, 8:30 a.m. local Mars time. The Curiosity rover captures the Sun rising on crags known as yardangs, a scene that scientists have long been waiting to see up close. 1/2

From fiction, to theory, our understanding that worlds collide has continued to advance, so that now we're observing post-collision debris disks around other stars & getting a statistical handle of just how common this kind of violent interaction may be. patreon.cosmoquest.org/posts…

While Superman can speed around the world and catch up to the day, he can never catch up to the light beam that eradicated the night. As he tries, all that will happen is his time will slow so that light always appears to fly the same rate. patreon.cosmoquest.org/posts…

Are you a Lunar Mapper? Have you seen weird indents ending in boulders? The Moon has places where boulders rolled across the landscape smushing things as they went. Geology gets weird sometimes! Map: mappers.psi.edu Support: patreon.cosmoquest.org

Astronomers in Kyiv, Ukraine, detected the beginning of a new outburst of the cataclysmic variable Gaia20cnt (ASASSN-14fc) using a Unistellar eVscope provided through the Astronomy for Equity program. The detection triggered follow-up observations with the 70-cm AZT-8 telescope at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The observations suggest that Gaia20cnt may be an SS Cyg-type dwarf nova (UGSS), a binary system in which material transferred onto a white dwarf periodically produces strong optical outbursts. Continued observations are now encouraged to better characterize the system. What makes this particularly significant is where the observations were made. Ukrainian astronomers continue to conduct research from Kyiv despite the war and increasingly serious electricity constraints. The team told Mike Simmons that conventional observatory operations may become difficult this winter because of power availability, making small, autonomous telescopes such as the eVscope potentially important tools for keeping astronomical observations going. This is a small but powerful example of how distributed, relatively inexpensive astronomical instruments can maintain scientific capability even under extremely difficult conditions. astronomerstelegram.org/?rea…

As if clouds can read clocks, just as the official start time of our stream approached, the roof came for us, like a wave of sheet metal, engulfing the telescope in disappointment and darkness.

THERE IS A LOT GOING ON AROUND COSMOQUEST. And I had caps lock on, but you know, that was an fitting cry for your attention. COME LOOK AT ALL THE STUFFS. Oh, and Pamela wrote a rambling intro about choosing science and why she hates economic drivers. patreon.cosmoquest.org/posts…
