The two best use cases for consumer AI: 1/ Navigating Kafkaesque industries: Muse saved me ~$6k negotiating labor & delivery bills with my insurance. 2/ Unlocking creativity: using Hermes to print a personalized children’s book for my son about my father who passed away.

In 1997, Apple released the “Here’s to the crazy ones” ad. It was classic Steve Jobs. Didn’t sell specs or pricing to customers. It was a philosophy that attracted a certain community. Bandit Running is using similar playbook in 2026. Its ads aren’t asking runners to buy gear, but join something.
“Here’s to the crazy ones…” Apple’s “Think Different” commercial first aired on this day in 1997. Apple was nearly bankrupt at the time.

I don’t know what it says about me/@collabfund but almost none of the decks I receive are AI-generated.
Roughly half of the decks I receive these days are Claude-generated, with ~default settings.

Fusion energy costs are indeed key to its eventual success. Those costs are deeply connected to a fusion company’s choice of architecture, where it’s critical not only that the eventual power plants can be economical, but most fundamentally, that a commercially relevant machine can actually work. That’s what we’re tackling with our SPARC machine outside Boston. Our project got a head start thanks to many years of collective operational experience that people have gained by running tokamaks around the world (to date over 1800 tokamak-years of operation across over 150 machines over the last 50+ years!). On top of that we add all our experience designing, manufacturing, constructing, commissioning, and operating SPARC. That work confirms our understanding of the physics, engineering, supply chain, performance, reliability, and cost. This collection of factors is the kind of knowledge that gets a company onto the cost curve so it can then scale up and drive down that cost curve. None of this is a slam dunk. But bear these points in mind when looking at the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and fusion competitiveness: • Every other form of energy on the grid also went through this shift toward being economical. What might look routine today, like burning coal or fissioning uranium, was once at the cutting edge of what was technologically possible. • The widely cited LCOE analysis by the energy experts at @Lazard only recently began to address the added cost some energy sources face to ensure they're firm (predictably available). And even then their extra firming costs only include 4 hours of power from a battery or firm power from a nearby gas plant, neither of which is really clean, firm 24x7 power. • LCOE has been increasing for all forms of energy in recent years, and demand for energy also is soaring. • While the cost for power is represented well by LCOE, the value of that power can be quite different. This is especially true for power that’s both clean and firm, but fusion has other advantages, too. It’s also highly energy dense and therefore land efficient. It’s safe and siteable nearly anywhere, including close to demand, and therefore requires less transmission. It has essentially negligible costs from fuel that’s abundant, available nearly everywhere, and essentially limitless. It’s highly secure, providing energy not through some collected or purchased resource, which leads to fuel volatility costs and geopolitical capture, but rather from a technology that can be built, owned, and fully fueled from day one. #FusionEnergy #Energy
Fusion has moved beyond the question of whether the physics can work. Now comes the harder test: Can companies build commercial power plants cheaply enough to compete with solar, batteries, gas and nuclear? @willwwade and I dug into the economics: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

I wrote a blog post about cold contacting in 2020, which people (/their AI) still reference in outreach to me. Some of this is a little cringeworthy in hindsight and the references (Skype!) are dated. But I still believe my key message: "There’s only one non-negotiable rule: send the message. If you’re looking for funding, VCs want to hear from you. That’s their job." collabfund.com/blog/the-case…
Seems like people are talking about personal comms again, so now is a good time to remind everyone that @carlyayres and I taught an entire class at Parsons New School MFA on how to market yourself, which included an entire section on writing cold emails and asking for help. carly.substack.com/p/how-to-…

Growing 10% a day 🤯 A general ruler I keep on my desk for startup growth trajectory Weekly growth rates : total yearly increase to overall user base 1% : 1.7x 2% : 2.8x 3% : 4.7x 4% : 7.7x 10% : 142x
A list of surprising and mind-boggling stats from this conversation: - $1B+ a year in transaction volume (still invite only) - Growing 10%+ A DAY and has spent zero dollars on marketing - 40% of users shared a personal credit card with Instinct within 3 weeks - Compute demand is doubling roughly every week - At 5 to 8% daily growth over the months it takes to bring new compute online, Instinct would reach about 100 million users - On Instinct's own A/B tests, it matches Opus 5 performance at a fraction of the cost - Noah spends about 40% of his time on compute - Buying compute at the last minute costs 3 to 4x more - Background work runs on setups that are 3x, 5x and 8x more efficient on the same compute - 50% of Instinct's transaction volume is travel - Instinct plans to take a cut of what users buy (take rates, Shopify is~2.5-3%, Amazon ~15%, Apple 30%) - Noah's personal goal is to keep Instinct free for everyone for life - Some small businesses run their entire back office on Instinct - Users who connect at least one piece of sensitive information retain at about 80% - Some users send more than 90% of their messages to Instinct by voice - Say an app makes 70% of its money from ads and 30% from actually selling you things. Agents could wipe out the 70%, but Noah thinks the 30% gets much bigger, because people buy more when buying takes zero effort - Instinct launched to about 200 friends and family - Invites have sold on eBay for around $300 - More than 50% of Instinct's traffic doesn't run on iMessage - Instinct has proactively called Noah three times - The company is less than a year old - Raised $1B at a $10B valuation, less than a month after raising at $2.5B - Noah is 23

Today I saw the future of robotics, and I’m convinced: robots will clean and cook for us and I can’t waaait!! Some people call that a useless luxury. My grandmother thought the same thing about washing machines. The future is cool. Give people their time back and see what they do with it.

Software is increasingly treated as disposable in the AI era. Yet we spend half our waking lives looking at screens! We don’t want to spend that time with zombie products—monotonous, vacant, and uncared for. We want products with soul. 💜 I go deep on this in my talk from @lennysan's Summit: youtube.com/watch?v=GLvFTMtw…

Energy costs are high, and growth is slow because we can't build fast enough. Alongside scrapping VAT on household electricity, we are proposing changes that would unlock speed to build, and with it growth and lower bills. - Stop making generation wait years to connect to the grid. - Let anyone qualified build the grid, not just the monopolies. - Enforce planning decision deadlines. All of this shows up in the price of every kilowatt-hour, and makes energy expensive for people and businesses. Our CEO @alanchanguk joined @SkyNews this week to launch our policy manifesto, setting out the key changes needed from Government to unlock energy abundance in the UK.
