This week at Colgate University, I shared practical tips students can use to build the courage to share their views on campus Something that resonated with students was that even if the campus environment isn’t ideal, they should take the initiative to build a better culture rather than waiting on universities to change Students told me that the main source of social pressure to stay quiet about their views comes from peers rather than faculty or admin. This means that students have more power to improve campus culture than they realize Some faculty members shared their own stories of peer pressure to stay silent about their heterodox or dissident views. They left with a renewed motivation to engage in difficult conversations and encourage more debate on campus There’s a lot of hidden intellectual diversity on college campuses waiting to be unleashed. Students and faculty who think differently must recognize that the costs of remaining silent are bigger than the costs of speaking up
