17 July 1944 | Jane Haining, a Church of Scotland missionary in Budapest, perished in Auschwitz. Her last message to friends was a postcard asking for food. She ended her letter with the words: “There is not much to report here on the way to heaven.” Jane Haining (b. 6 June 1897) was arrested in Budapest by the Gestapo and later deported to Auschwitz. On 14 May 1944, she was registered in the camp as prisoner 79467. She was recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations.
