Today’s @FinancialTimes front page: Spending across the West End is up 13% after we pedestrianised Oxford St.
Once again data shows active travel boosts business.
I seldom monitor ‘Twitter’ now. I had a quick but just had a scan at reactions to this.
It never ceases to amaze me how some are outraged having not read the article.
I know they haven’t read it, as if they had, they’d realise they’re’ being outraged by me agreeing with them.
So the concern of pedestrians - many of us elderly & disabled - put at risk and having to use pavements & crossings with trepidation (and in some cases stay at home) is dismissed by @Chris_Boardman as ‘the latest outrage’.
Disgraceful.
Nearly 30,000 people were killed or seriously injured on Britain’s roads last year.
That should shape where police focus, not the latest outrage.
It’s time to push the facts to the front. By me in @spectator:

You missed a tiny bit out:
1.7 million GP visits saved,
Over 4 million fewer sick days,
household savings of up to £1700,
2,500 early deaths prevented.
115 billion in value to the economy.
I don’t have enough space for the rest. 😀
Guns or… zebra crossings?
Amid the defence budget crisis, some are baffled as to why the government is spending £4.5 billion on zebra crossings and other measures to aid walking and cycling. But, Olympic cyclist @Chris_Boardman says it will give Brits health and independence.
I don't do a lot of posting here but today, I thought a story needed telling and some dots needed joining. It's about the most powerful health, cost-of-living and growth policy you've never heard of: linkedin.com/pulse/most-powe…

National Active Travel Commissioner @Chris_Boardman has welcomed @transportgovuk @LilianGreenwood's announcement today on pavement parking.👇

ALT Text on a green background that reads: “Pavements were built for people, not parked cars. They should always be usable by a parent with a double buggy and by someone using a wheelchair. When we design streets this way, healthier, greener journeys become the natural choice—and communities are better for it. Chris Boardman, National Active Travel Commissioner."
