I’ve spoken with MPD’s Cmdr Hall as well as head of ABCA. We’ve seen repeated issues outside Cafe 8, including gunshots. The latest left 2 people shot. MPD & ABCA are investigating and I believe an emergency closure should take place until this business changes how they operate.

Where Metro goes, community grows.
NoMa-Gallaudet U shows what can happen when transit and development grow together. The station area leads the Metro system in transit-oriented development added since 2019, with 10,826 new residential units and $4.28 billion in added assessed property value.
That growth is reflected at the station, where NoMa-Gallaudet U has been a leader in ridership recovery and is setting new ridership records.
Behind those numbers is a neighborhood where homes, jobs, shops, and public spaces come together, with Metro connecting the community to opportunities across the region.
That’s transit-oriented development: supporting economic growth and making it easier to reach everyday destinations without a car.
The #WeekWithoutDriving challenge begins today. My commute looked a lot like it normally does with a short walk to Union Station, a smooth trip to Metro Center, and a couple of blocks walk to the Wilson Building.
Today’s the day! 🚗🚫 Take the National #WeekWithoutDriving pledge and see if you can go car-free or car-light from now through Oct. 8.
This annual challenge offers a chance to experience the barriers people face when they can’t drive and raise awareness of the great public transit options available in our region.
Every car-free mile helps tell the story of why accessible, reliable transportation matters. 💙🚆 🚍 Be sure to share your story and tag us in your photos! 📷

Groundbreaking to ribbon cutting! ✂️
115 new affordable homes delivered in the heart of NoMa. Amazing connections to Metro, schools, grocery, & jobs. In addition, Green Bank financing means higher efficiency & lower utility costs - so the bills are more affordable!
Today, my Transportation committee approved Eric’s ID Law. DC will join several other states giving residents with non-apparent disabilities a choice to add a symbol on their ID. Also adds training for law enforcement. Big thx to Eric & his mother for joining us at today’s vote!
The line to get in was wrapped around the block. Folks had brought chairs to just set up and enjoy from just outside as well. What a great event at MLK for #ArtAllNight with @dcpl!
We see you, DC! Welcome to the MLK Library! #ArtAllNight ❤️

If you ever visited the Southeast Library in Eastern Market, you'll remember it was... cramped. The newly renovated library reopens this Thursday, and it's awesome. The original building is intact, but an expanded ground floor and new basement have doubled the overall size.
I’ve spoken with heads of HSEMA & DDOT. An update:
- 1,100+ reports of tree damage have come in. Many are duplicates, but about 400 individual trees seriously damaged
- Wards 6 &7 seeing biggest impact
- DDOT hard at work prioritizing 20+ crews responding, but this will take days
My team and I are flagging these for DDOT & their crews. Please remember:
1. Report to 311
2. Preach a little patience - crews are out and will be out for a few days
3. Fallen trees aren't stable, we need to make sure kids (and adults) aren't climbing in or on them
Tons of trees down this morning. Quick tips:
1. Report downed trees to 311.
2. Build extra time into travel - there are several roads & sidewalks blocked.
3. Do not climb on or in downed trees; they can still shift & settle.
The city has 20+ crews starting work to clear.
As we’re assessing the damage this morning, there are a lot of downed trees. DDOT will have dozens of teams out today working to clear but it will take time. Please call 311 to report a downed tree or blocked sidewalk/road. Please also add a little extra time for school & work.
In just a quick walk around, a LOT of downed trees & damage. At 5th & F St NE, a giant tree came down, crushed a car, & blocks road and sidewalks. Another street tree is leaning precariously on a home. Talked with the neighbor & they’re ok for now. @DDOTDC crews going to be busy!
